Manfrotto Heads

Hi All

I've got a Manfrotto 055ProB tripod with a 804RC2 three way pan and tilt head and 488RC2 ball head.
My question is do i need both, and do different types of photography warrant different head type's. My interest are Landscapes some wildlife and anything unusual and qwerky.
Your views will be most welcome.

I find 3 way heads to be more precise but cumbersome, whereas ball heads I find more intuitive but lacking the nth degree of precise control.

For landscapes I would suggest a 3 way head to ensure horizons are level and minimal post-processing for stitching panoramas etc, for wildlife I would suggest a ball head as it's quicker to position and wildlife rarely hangs around until you're ready to shoot!

Either would probably do a good job on a full-time basis though.

IMHO it is just a matter of personal choice, I've never liked ball heads. I do like my Manfrotto #029 Mk2 three way with spirit levels

I got the same ballhead as you - and I find it to cover almost any situation.

I rarely think I need a 3 way head.

Usually I need to react pretty fast - and a 3 way head is just to slow IMO.

If you only do landscape or similar - the 3 way head is probably better - but I like the ball head as an allrounder.

I use the 460MG 3way head almost exclusively - I don't really get on with ball heads, but then I shoot mostly macro and lanscape. However one useful trick with a 3 way head is to take the time to get both tripod and camera level, and then you can slacken off pan and/or tilt when following moving subjects, thus keeping the camera level at all times.

I think i will use the the 804RC2 mainly for Lanscapes then what i'll do is to buy a 055CCSB short column for the Ball Head then if needed i can switch between the two more easily.
