I think it is about time that all new members and not so new members give their location, It is nice to know where everyone comes from, if you don't know how to do it let me know,

Jack.

Mandatory is not a good way to go. If members want to state their locations then they will be able to do so intheir profiles, but it is entirely up to them.

Well John you maybe correct in what you say, but a lot of new members seem to be joining the forum just to sell stuff, I have been watching,
many of the old members seem to have left or do not comment anymore which is a shame as we all have a wealth of information to help others, In my opinion to give your location should be mandatory as different photographers throughout the country have different views of their location and it would be nice to know where they come from, this is only my opinion and I would like to know how the regular members feel about it,

regards
Jack.

Not sure it should be mandatory but it is certainly helpful to know where the poster is located.
For example knowing which country so that allowances can be made for interpretation of etc.

I think it's a case of being ok to put your county (or large city if you live in or near one) but I wouldn't want to put my town in.

For example, saying you live in Cardiff would be fine. A tiny village like Cwmystwyth? Not such a good idea!

(No I don't live there. I have driven through it a fair number of times though!)

I know what you mean about people joining to sell Jack. Some of them could have been 'lurkers' for years, just not wanting to join. Others do seem to be wanting to sell only.

I agree that a location is nice to have but fail to see how this would alter the get rich quick joiners joining.

As for that village in Wales Matt!!!

Jack. I noted your comment on one of my threads. I live in Great Britain and have personal reasons for not being more specific. I ask for your understanding in this. I suspect that locations will be of more interest to those not living here in Great Britain. I think that there is more than enough rules on this forum to keep everyone happy and under control.

This has already recently been covered in another thread.

As for people joining to sell, well there's nothing to stop them doing that, and of course exisiting members will be more careful when dealing with an unknown person. Caveat emptor. For sellers, it's not the best way to say hello as you are unknown and the sale will probably be less likely to happen.

As there are no significant problems, doing something about this is finding a cure for something that doesn't happen.

I've moved this to General Chat so that new members don't feel pressurised in the Just Joined? forum. Hardly the best welcome to see words like "mandatory".....

Can I suggest a similar restriction to that which is imposed on new users regarding PM's.

I think, new users should not be allowed to make purchases or snap up freebies from this forum until they've made at least an X number of posts.

If the items offered are also on ebay, new users should take their chances there where at least everybody has the same chance of winning.

Already suggested, passed on, and for various reasons can't be done.

Apart from anything else, it's not very often a problem, and it is watched very closely.

It translates as "Valley of the (river) Ystwyth". Good photography country, something for everyone. You can have wild moorland, old mine workings, the waterfalls at Devil's Bridge or the sea within about thirty miles or so!

Barrie. I have made enough input into this forum for those, interested enough, to know that I live in Great Britain, and I am happy to leave it that way. I do not wish to offend but just stating my point of view. I do not wish to be pressured to conform to the opinion of a few members. I am happy to state my location via the PM's to any member who has a reason to know.

Make it mandatory and everyone will put a location in. Is it the true location? You'll never know. (You know, some people lie on the internet:shock

I think it's up to everyone to make the decision how much or little information they want to share. Let's not make more rules than necessary.

And a very personal comment from me

I'm happy enough with having my location known - but I would have preferred my actual name to be unknown .

If I try and remove it - I'm told I have to give it
let the education continue
