I have been there quite a few times due to my wife's family connections with the island. There are good photo opportunities in the capital Valetta which has huge medieval fortifications dating from 1566, the Grand Harbour is particularly impressive. It is also has attractive old streets and architecture, the streets all run in straight lines either north-south or east-west. There's a lot to shoot if you wander around and like that sort of thing. The harbours often have colourful fishing boats which are a good subject too.
Despite being smaller than the Isle of Wight, Malta has 365 churches, some parish churches are Cathedral size and again the architecture can be outstanding and include wonderful pieces of art (some are a bit over the top too to English eyes!). Check out Mdina too, the medieval walled city (and original capital) with narrow streets unchanged in their layout. It's high up so you also get views over the local countryside.

The locals all speak English (it's an ex colony) and are always very friendly.
Enjoy your trip!

When I was in Malta many years ago I made a trip to the island of Gozo. Well worth while I thought.
