i now have LR3 & LR4 on computer and both work,
i have never upgraded LR before and the older copy still works, most software
usally upgrades and takes over the older copy,
only thing different is i set a new location,
(LR4 drive E, IR3 on drive C) for catolgue, so still have lr3 catolgue.

i have no problems with either.
If you're thinking of getting LR4 I'd wait.
I've just started using it and found a few bugs.
The develop module seems slower than LR3 and I can no longer use dual monitors, if I try and go to develop module when using dual monitors LR4 hangs.
Lets hope Adobe can fix these bugs soon!

But let's try again in this cyber-zone of secured bytes.....
I've gone back to LR4.0 as LR4.1RC is flipped.

Been playing with LR4.1 for the last hourish and I think it's faster than LR4.0 I may be wrong but it goes from the library to the develop module a lot quicker.
They'ev changed the develop module and the way it updates after parameter changes. They've turned the sharpening off while you have your mouse on the sliders. It's horrible I tell thee

Well and truly flipped!!!

Its the future

I like it! Do you hold down the ALT key while sharpening?
Its the future

Alt-Key while sharpening? Nope. How does that affect the new 4.1 parameter behaviour

Try it. It makes the whole thing just better, turns the image B+W for one and then as you work your way down the sliders the image changes to offer a better view for sharpening. Works in all versions of LR as for as I know. Hold down the ALT key as you slider the sliders, becomes 2nd nature very quickly.
Yeah I've tried that before. For me the best view of sharpening is to view it's effect on the actual image. But it is a great feature fro those like like it

I've just created a new catalogue in LR4 and don't get the dual monitor problem. The problems must be something to do with the catalogue update process.
No I don't have shares in Adobe.
btw - I've come across the dual monitor bug. All my catalogues aren' new but updated versions. However I've found that the dual monitor bug manifests itself here when I'm working RAW/DNG files and not JPGs or TIFFs. Hence why I didn't find it before.
I've found if you create a new catalogue and then use the import from catalogue option you can then use dual monitors in develop mode with DNG files.
I create a catalogue for each year so have only created a new catalogue for 2012 and am hoping Adobe fix the updating catalogue bug in the next release so I can open the previous years OK.
I realise it's not ideal but worth a try.
