Idea for London weekend:
Go to Euston on Friday night, take the night sleeper (with berth) and wake up in Fort William, then take connecting train to Arisaig, walk to Morar along the coast road with a good stash of batteries and memory cards, return to London overnight Sunday in time for work on Monday. It's an experience - in summer you can take the steam train from FW to Mallaig. If you like landscape, a fantastic rail journey; if you like the sea, a beautiful coast. Check it out in Google maps.
Sleeper prices can be expensive, but not necessarily:

Haha sounds good, I've been meaning to go to Wales/Lake District etc for ages.. never gotten round to it.. should probably give it a go.. I have a five day weekend

Sounds fantastic. I presume they don't stop at any stations South of the border, other than London.

I feel a tad ashamed that having sought to travel to far-flung exotic places, I have yet to explore the UK anywhere north of maybe... Essex-ish? Unless on some random holiday to Edinburgh etc..
The lake district looks absolutely beautiful and I've been meaning to go, but simply don't have enough time at the moment (also, isn't the UK gov supposed to be encouraging brits to stay in the country for holidays? I've just looked at train prices and it's more expensive than a flight to Italy :S).
Anyhow, the Lakes will have to wait.. instead, is anyone down in London who fancies a walkabout? Also in Paris next weekendish if anyone fancies it (I see a few people from France on the forums?).
