The unread thread issue came with the new forum design.

Complained loudly I did, including 'report problem'.

No one seems to either a) care or b) understand so we have to put up with it or move on.

It's the main reason that I joined another forum and spend less time here.

Perhaps we should think of the indicators more as "activity since last visit" rather than "unread" as it seems they reset as soon as we leave the site.
Perhaps they should just make it work properly.

It's not necessary to log out, why not stay logged in?
I tend to agree with John. I have never had to "log in" after I leave the Pentax User Site. It always comes back up and never had to log back in. I see no point in it.

If I shut this System down when not in use, and then restart, it always comes back up on the screen the way it was before. I was told that shutting down your System at night and then restarting it all the time is not really good for it. Restarting is when it draws the most power and it's not really a whole lot. I suggest, when you are done, just leave well enough alone and stay logged in. It should come back the way you left it.

Kind Regards
Les

A little unfair to say no-one cares, because I know they do.

Sometimes it's just a matter of priorities and the amount of benefit. We can be sure that whatever is changed there will be others who don't like the change. Sometimes it's a technical issue that can be difficult, such as the EXIF reporting problem in the Gallery seems to be.

But mostly I would expect it's a matter of time - can one IT expert spend a whole day on an issue that isn't vital when there are plenty of critical things to deal with?

If they cared it would work.

This is one of the most basic, rudimentary parts of any forum, the ability to read it! This is a priority!

It is not a technical issue as every other forum on the web seems to manage it.

If every time you went back to a book and your bookmark had been moved because someone else had visited the room, you would be really @$%&*@ off!

There is no excuse for it, every other forum I've used in the past had it, every one I use currently has it and we have even lost members because of it!

Releasing a new forum without a 'new posts since last read' option is akin to releasing a new car without indicators. It's stupid and pathetic and not fit for purpose.

As for time? It's around 2 years or more now since the revamp I believe and it STILL isn't fixed. Perhaps if the advertising depended on it, it would be up and running by 9.10am?

If you go to the forum tab you will find New Posts is an option. Or recent Activity. Or a variety of other options.

If you still find that what you require is not there, then please make a report.

I know the car doesn't have an indicator, but if you wind the sunroof back and stand on the chair, you can point the direction you want to go, or many other options. Of course it would be better to just put indicators on it, but look at all the other options available!!

Report was made over 2 years ago, as soon as the forum was changed, thought I had made that clear. NO ONE CARES!!!

Then why not just use a F/OSS one which already has these issues addressed? (If anyone else needs one ... )

Another frustrated Report submitter: I put in a privacy related one months ago, and I know the fix is a single IF statement, with no impact on existing members, but nothing. And no my real name is not Joe User!

Re login, just don't bother for reading forums. I just go to Forums > Recent Activity and scan down and then stop when I recognise a post that I've already seen. A joke in this day and age that may well be, but that's the way this Forum is set up, and it is their Forum ...

There are plenty of forums on the web that I don't like in one way or another but I don't get over excited about it.

All forums are not the same and they don't all operate the same way except PU....

Oops! Somebody just removed the bookmark in the book (i.e. PU Forum) I was reading! Good analogy, Unlocker.

Well, I was reading the Forum on my laptop and had quite a few Unread marks un the list. Then, just as a test, I logged in on my office computer as well. All the Unread marks disappeared. Most disappointing!

Perhaps somebody could explain to me how these marks are supposed to work?
Best regards
Terry

As far as I can tell the green markers exist until you leave the site. By logging on from elsewhere it was presumably arriving fresh, so to speak, so the only green markers would have been new ones since your last visit.

If that's a problem why not just minimise the page until ready to resume viewing. I can understand that it's daunting to try and read everything if you haven'y visited for a while, but it would be the same if it kept the markers. You would never know what was new, just what you hadn't read.

As things stand, you arrive at the site and everything that's new since your last visit has a green marker. You leave the site and the slate is wiped clean. It seems to me as good a way of doing things as any other way. If the markers remained, then eventually everything in sight would be marked as green unless you read every single post. If you do read every single post then the current system isn't really a problem anyway.

Exactly! I would like to know what I haven't read, not necessarily what is new since last visit. I can always click Mark All As Read when finished with a topic.

Your best bet then is to make a report asking for a new tab under Forum called "Unread Posts" and I'm sure if it's possible to do then it will be added to the To Do list.

The way I see it as a end user using my simple logic is, if I “read” a thread it should be marked as “read” if I don’t it should stay as “unread”, unless I decide to mark it as "read" regardless of how I use my Laptop’s or Desktop PC’s .

I agree wholeheartedly. That's my logic also.
