Winter has been very kind so far in Southern England this year.

This weekend has been just like Spring.

I hope it continues.

The photograph was taken as a JPEG.

I have not yet progressed to shooting in RAW

The swan is a young adult and in the final stages of becoming all white. The head and upper neck still have the last remains of the brown down of the young swan.

Strange really that the adults are much more attractive than the young. In a lot of species, the young are a lot more appealing than the adults.

it looks to me as if the depth of field starts behind the swan.

An interesting thought, so I checked back. The camera was set to just the single centre autofocus point and the centre of the original photograph (this one has been cropped) is the water behind the swan.

Does this shed any light on the matter ?

It does! It was the beak that looked a little soft to me, still a very nice composition and a good pose from the swan - always put the spot focus on the eye and re-compose.

Thanks for the tip. The swan was 'zipping about' a lot, spending most of its time either in the shade or with its head under water or behind its wing.

So I was glad to get this shot !

Shooting wildlife is not easy - they will not pose to order !

Another one of swans from me:

Comment Image

Focus is slightly too deep I think - on the neck rather than the head. I was having a play with an old manual 70-150 f3.6 zoom lens at the time.
If it moves shoot it .... if it doesn't, shoot it till it does.
