Hi!

I took a chance and posted an image for c&c. I kind of like it myself, but not sure if I should like it. So I want you to tell me if it's any good. I used the da 18-55 lens at 24 mm, f/16, multisegment metering, -0.30 compensation, ISO 400, 1/160s. The settings might have been bit wrong, so please if any ideas on this then comment.

Regards,
Tobio

It's a decent shot, nothing to be nervous about Nice and sharp, good exposure, level horizon, all good!

The subject matter isn't completely to my taste but hey you can't please everyone right?

I like the lines of the bricks and railings, and the shadow of the railings is especially cool (in fact I would go back at the same time of day and try and get a few shots of just the railings and shadow interplay).

I agree with Tim's thoughts almost to the word. I did wonder if you could lose the block middle left but if you then it looks less 'grounded'. The background hasn't been kind to you as it's quite cluttered.

I agree that block has to go. I don't know why I left that block there when I cloned out some other clutter from the foreground, must be getting near sighted or sumthin. Also the background has more than enough distracting factors. Though by removing all the distractions the photo would lose some of it's realism I believe. Now that I look at it more analytically, I think it was a bit strange choice to post here. I originally wanted to continue the Critique Thread, but I found out that both free Picasa's web album and Photobucket don't allow to hotlink big photos and I thought it would be useless to try work on very small sized image so I did just a new topic. Thanks for the comments I'll see if I manage to improve on this photo or will I just post a new bit more exciting photo.

I like the sweep of the rails in one direction and bridge in the other. The rail shadow is neat, as Tim says. Colours are good. Shadows are a bit dense, and Mike's right about the busy b/g. Is it over-sharp too? I think possibly. I'd probably crop lower too. There's certainly potential here though, and a re-visit might be a good idea as Tim suggests.

I'm afraid it's not that simple as I want also other people to like my 'art' so I tend to ask questions opinions from people who I believe to be knowledgeable.

I used to flip a coin, but many people said that I looked just like that two faced guy in that batsy movie when I did that so I had to stop doing it and now I'm looking for a safe alternative... Actually I meant that somebody on the forum could comment their opinions about the photo. I make my own decisions, or at least I think I so...

It's an odd sort of shot, a bit uninvolving and austere. I wonder if a mono conversion wouyld help. Just make it an almost abstract, modernist sweep of curved lines. Emphasise the emptiness and featureless sky.

Don't know. But if you like it as it is, don't let me put you off!
Best wishes,

Andrew

What do you think?

(Would make an interesting image for another of Kris's Critique threads, I feel.)

Thanks for the comment and image editing effort. One problem is that I sometimes rush my photo taking and perhaps this photo could have been better with some time and thought. Your composition idea is a good one I think. Also, I wanted to make this the Critique Thread number 4, but as I said earlier I couldn't find a place that would make possible to hotlink a big image and a small image is not worthy of the Critique Thread idea. I will see if I can find somewhere a place that would allow me to hotlink a bigger image.

Good thread! I like the mono version although I think I would be inclined to crop off the bottom so that the frame ended at the curving shadows in the foreground, although maybe that's just me...

Andrew - that crop is excellent, well spotted! You've changed it from an image I was quite neutral about to one I rather like.

I know exactly what you mean, Matt. Why didn't I spot that? I guess I was concentrating on the lead-in lines and the array of lights.

Thanks, Tim. I felt there was something in the shot. Odd that it needed subtraction!

Sorry Tobio for hi-jacking your interesting thread. Don't worry about not getting a shot 100% right in camera. We rarely have enough time to really work a scene. Sometimes when an image comes on the screen we see other possibilities. And square format cameras are very unusual these days. They were fun to use, though and really made you think and look!

I'll shut up now!
Best wishes,

Andrew
