Very nice mono conversion! To be honest when I saw the shot, it reminded me of a brochure shot for either a bridge manufacturer, or paving supplier. Quite well taken, but not interesting enough to stand on its own merit as an image. The contrast seemed a bit strong too.

Andrew's conversion showed there was a satisfying image in there just waiting to be released! The strong contrast becomes more of a benefit in black and white, and removing the inessential parts of the image creates a strong composition of lines and curves. There's something not quite right about where the right hand side of the image is cropped, but it's a great improvement.

Thanks for all the c&c. I was positively surprised by the number of posts. This is my final version. I like it better than my first version, so one of my goals was met, though I must say it's still not one of my favorite photos.

OK, but beware that you don't fall into the trap of continually criticising yourself to the point where nothing satisfies you - photography should be fun too!

Thanks for your comment and insight too, Andrew, and of course for your great crop suggestion that I decided not to imitate because I think I better do things my style though it may not please everyone. In this case most comments seemed to be unfavorable towards my style, even I was a bit unsure of it.
