Some of my images have been published in a local cultural magazine... I know the guys who run it... My name has not appeared on the front page list for contributors... Bit miffed...

Lurking is shirking.!

Pretty much yeah.

It's part of a pull-out - Know some of the other photographers on the page and their names are on page one... Mine just isn't.

...or demand a full page apology and big compensation payout...

.........maybe not....

A mention in the next issue will be better than nothing, and may get you more work..

I asked if those whose images were used were normally added to the contributors list and was told no... This despite there being names on that list of photographers I know whose images were used in the same section as mine...
I won't be submitting any more to them unless I'm certain of gaining credit

Absolutely. It's good practice to print names alongside the photographs; at a minimum, to include them in an acknowledgements list. But slips occur, so it's only a problem if done deliberately or (if inadvertent) repeatedly.

Not entirely sure how it works over there, but here at least, if they forget the acknowledgement you have a right to be compensated for it, and they have to correct it with a note sometime in a later issue.

Currently here it is a freelance fee (#flf from now on).
i. They use your image with your consent, and credit you correctly, it is 1x #flf.
ii. They use your image with your consent, but forget to credit you, it is 2x #flf.
iii. They use the image without your consent, and do not credit you, it is 3x #flf.
iv. If they refuse to compensate, and you have to go the legal way, it will be 3x #flf plus whatever legal fees you have had.

Case iii. have gotten a bit too common lately. Because you submit your image to one magazine (by case i.), and they add it to a shared database.
Then some time later another magazine find the image in the database and decides to run with it (iii.).

With the popularity of SNS magazines and newspapers have gotten too cocky these days. They often believe they are able to use whatever images they like without any regards about the photographer.

My advice, if you really are upset about it, is to figure out what laws apply where you are, and use them.

Tbh I can't see what the big deal is at all about credits

Let me put it in different terms that might make it more clear.

A bookstore want to up their sales a bit and goes looking for an excellent book.
They find one, and decides to OCR only the story in the book.
After striping away the cover, the title, and whatever else there is that might identify the book, they re-print it under their own name and cover.
Now they start to sell the book for personal profit.

It is wrong on so many levels. Not to forget, that since no one knows who wrote the book, the author lose out on any book deals that might have come because of his excellent work.

The author is now doing involuntary pro bono.

That isn't what the op is talking about. He gave permission for his work to be used.

Third post in the thread

I have thousands of pictures on clients websites and I would never expect a credit. Here is an example link you wouldn't really expect to see a photographers credit here but the brochure is mostly photographs, they happen to be mine

The thing that upsets me is that other the photographers whose images were used in the same feature were credited but mine were not...
It's a free community magazine; the work of which I support... Nobody profits from it except the community it supports... So legal action is absolubtly not a path I'm willing to follow...
Like I said, I know the guys who run it... I just feel a bit let down (possibly betrayed) My initial post was deffo in anger... I won't be submitting anymore images to the group (the DJ one in my gallery is one of 5 they used)
