Lightroom2 Questions

Hi,

Thinking of buying Lightroom 2 and am a bit puzzled.

When you import the pics from the memory card does it copy them and keep the originals on the memory card? If so does it just copy them into the lightroom library so it doesnt touch the original?

If so and i imported the pics and then put the pics on the memory card tomy backup drive. When i go through the files in lightroom and delete the ones i donbt want will it automatically delete the ones i dont want frommy backup location?

Normally you would copy from a card, so the originals are still safe on the card.

If you then copied them separately to your backup drive then it might mean that you have a set independednt of what Lightroom does, but maybe that depends on whether you are mirroring your main drive or how else it is all set up.

Hopefully a Lightroom user will be along in a moment or two to clarify that point!

You have 4 options available in LR2 when importing files.....
a: Add photos to catalog without moving.
b: Copy photos to a new location and add to catalog (with various folder choices).
c: Move photos to a new location and add to catalog (with various folder choices).
d: Copy photos as Digital Negative (DNG) and add to catalog (with various folder choices).

You get both choices, remove from catalog (file is not deleted or remove from catalog and delete file

There may be better converters out there, Silkypix and Capture One both have a good reputation but for a combined catalog/conversion app nothing comes close to LR2 ........ on a Windows PC anyway

So i could import from my memory card to a folder where i import all my pics and then delete my memory card?

If i made an edit to the file then in lightroom it wont modify the file i have just put in that folder but the file in the catalog only?

Yes and Yes,
All LR2 edits are non destructive, your adjustments are saved alongside the file in the catalog, you can even catalog and re-edit your PSD/JPG files

When you import your images from your card, LR2 has another option to make a second backup copy of the files which you could store on your external drive. So you can do the whole thing in one operation.

LR2 is well worth the money. Since buying it, I rarely use Photoshop any more.

The only annoying thing about it as far as I'm concerned is that it's catalogue file can't be stored on a network drive.

I recommend 'The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers' by Martin Evening as a hard copy reference.

I echo the above positives about using Lightroom (albeit I have version 1.x). I have the book for v1 that Steve has mentioned - excellent!

Also a great thing one can do with any file is to make any number of virtual copies within LR and so apply any number of different effects/ treatments/ processing styles - and be able to simultaneously view them alongside each other and all without changing the original file, or significantly increasing the amount of memory used to store them.
