Lightroom 3.3, some help PLEASE!
The trick with LR is use the folders, keywords and flags etc to arrange your catalogue.
I've got my source files in various folders on several different hard drives i.e. my overseas holiday images is on my F drive in folders with location and year (i.e. Zimbabwe 96) and these are imported into LR and sit in a sub section of the LR catalogue relating to the F drive . My H drive's got my UK stuff in it by, organised by subject, location and date where appropriate with all images having key words like the camera body, lens etc. added.
As long as you use folder names which make them easily identifiable when reduced to the end string in the library's L/H panel, i.e. F: - NZ Mar 10 - 1403 Christchurch, this works. The example above isn't perfect, but it does at least allow me to find and differentiate it from it's related folder, 2712 Christchurch.
(Note: - used for back slash as site won't allow it as "text")

collections and folders are two different thing, folder is how it looks on the disk and collections is only in lightroom.
You can make smart collection, that's most likely the easiest and best way to do it since it keeps track on your tags and keywords.

I got about 100 pictures of Lighthouses, so I would like them in a library called lighthouses and eliminate them from the other 6000 pictures, but I can not figure out for the world how to do that plus how do I save everything I have done so far and pick it up from this point tomorrow?
This is very easy to do in LR (once you know how

In the Library tab select the images you wish to add to a new catalog (can be RAW, Tiff, JPG or PSD or a mixture) then go File/Export as Catalog, give your new catalog a name and browse to the appropriate location in the dialog box and hit save.
Before you hit the save button select the desired settings at the bottom of the dialog box paying special attention to "Export Negative Files" Selecting "Export Negative Files" creates new copies of the selected files within the catalog so in theory you can delete the files from the original catalog, just make sure they exist before you do so (I always hate deleting original files just in case

Cheers
Brian.

OK, so I worked my butt off this weekend and cached up with sleep yesterday and today I was presented with Lightroom 3.3 (learned a lot too but it was hard work this time round, but I do not complain as I got what I wanted)

I got as far as importing a catalog in to a library that contains over 6000 pictures (raw and jpeg).
All of those where previously in different folders but where taken over to the catalog when I clicked on my pictures.
It's no big deal as I wanted to sort them anyway so I thought I first do the keywords so I can do search pattens and then place them in new libraries.
What I can not figure out is how do I do new libraries and how can I remove the pictures that have been completed?

First thing, i think you meant collections and not libraries but correct me if i'm wrong
collections and folders are two different thing, folder is how it looks on the disk and collections is only in lightroom.
You can make smart collection, that's most likely the easiest and best way to do it since it keeps track on your tags and keywords.

Yup, Smart Collections are excellent. I make extensive use of them. Simply create a smart collection and get it to only include images which contain the keyword lighthouse and your done. All future pics of lighthouses you keyword will be added to the smart collection.

Would have come back earlier but my connection suffered yesterday from constant outages, today it seems all OK again.
I now have 3 (three) Catalog files one is 'All Photographs' then there is one 'Previous Import' and another one is 'Previous Export as Catalog'

I also have one 'Folder' which contains also all my pictures but this one kept the sub-folders.
Next I have got 'Collections' with the Smart folder that shows me various sub-folders that I never placed in there and only three make sense to me (at the moment). Those are 'Last Month', 'Recently Modified', and 'Without Keywords' The others like 'Colored Red' and 'Fife Stars' do not make any sense to me as there are no pictures included in either. The last one is a 'Videos' folder which is also empty but this is easy to understand.

But after the selection of 'Smart folders' I now have 'My Pictures' again, but this is empty.
So, I got 3 folders in 'Catalog', each containing over 6000 pictures (have I backed them up three times????

And then there is the 'Folders' file, which I think is the source file, that also contains over 6000 pictures.
I thought I start with a folder that has not been sorted so far (and none of my pictures have had keywords so I started on them to get a feel for the program before I go to the more important files).
I was hoping that I could pictures that I already Keyworded can be placed out of the list that still needs Keywords but I just make a rough selection I would have to get in to each picture again to detail the Keywords further. I just seem to be unable to select juts the i.e. Lighthouse Keywords NOT to show up and leave ALL the other pictures in place, even if they have the occasional Keyword.
How can I place them also in separate folders again, or is that not necessary?
Kind regards

It's nice to be nice!
Pentax K-5 with D-GB4 Grip, to many lenses to mention by now (serious LBA by now), TC's, Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW, Manfrotto 028 & Redsnapper RS-283 with various Heads plus various Camera Clamps (I collect them). Pentax AF 360FGZ, Pentax AF 240FT, several Metz 45 CT-1 & 5 with stands and 'Blow Up' Soft Boxes, Flash Triggers, and various Macro gear.
I am more of a visual person, meaning I understand processes easier when I see how it gets done. Fore some reason it takes me ages to get my head around it when I just read about it, so the link has been bookmarked.
Many thanks again.

That's becuase the collections are 'smart' and will sit there scanning your catalogues waiting for an image to satisfy it's rules.
if you select an image and hit the 5 key to rate it with a 5 you'll see teh 5 star smart collection update to contain one image.
The last one is a 'Videos' folder which is also empty but this is easy to understand.

You don't need to create seperate physical folders, but you can store your smart collections in collections sets.
If you want to create a list of images that exclude all lighthouse images then create a Smart selection that has the rule
keywords - does not contain - lighthouse
The list of rules yo can apply to a smart collection is immanse.
I've created smart collections for my cameras, so I can show all pics taken by K-5, K20D and so on.
You could create a smart collection to show all pics taken with a certain lens at a certain aperture,
etc
etc
etc
Great fun

I will play around with the smart folders as this is what it seems I would look for.
One more question for now if I may
Do I have to save anything when I close Lightroom or will all changes that I made be automatic, as I can not see a 'save as' or 'save' options but rather exports imports etc?
Kind regards

I'm no Adobe fanboy but this is some of the most effective and well designed software I've ever used. It took me a few months to realise that it was a database application which needs thought and time to learn. But once understood it makes everything to do with image handling easier and faster.
I can't think how I'd manage without it now.

Same here. There's some improvements I'd like such as more develop parameters being available to Grad filters, etc but I'm loving Lightroom.

Another slant on this is the Library Filters, hit the backslash key when in the Library tab and another load of search options become available without needing keywords.
Cheers

Another keyword tip is in the keyword list if you hover over a keyword a white right arrow appears.. click on this and instant smart collection of all pics with that keyward
