The situation is as followed.
- Going to install windows 7 tonight.
- use Lightroom 2.4 for my photos.
- photos are saved on the D: disk but the ligthroom catalogue is on the C: but that's going to be erase by Windows 7

the question
- how do I preserve the lightroom catalogue and restore it?

Anvh how about copying the catalogue to D: then back to C: after installing Windows 7 and Lightroom 2.4.
Personally I use my own cataloguing system as against Lightroom 2.4.

That might be the solution Tom but I want to know for sure that it works since Lightroom also save the change you make to a raw file in that catalogue.
It's great since the RAW files on D: are the original unaltered files from the camera so if the copying back doesn't work I lose all the developing on my photos.

Copy the catalog file to any disk for restoration later.

In your case, the catalog will point to images on the D drive.

If the images are still on D drive after the upgrade and point Lightroom at that folder for it's catalog when you re-install Lightroom, simply copy the catalog to a folder of your choosing after the upgrade, but not on a network drive, and it will still point to your images.

I've done it several times, and it works for me. All previous editing data is preserved.

Okay thanks Peter will do that now and hopefully will be back soon.
I hate to install OS, you lose everything on so it will take some time to reinstall everything. At least we will have a fresh start now and hopefully it will run a bit better then windows does now.

Do you also have that problem with Apple that it clogs down after a while?

Stefan -

This document (link) should give you all the info you need, it's fairly straightforward to move/backup/restore the catalogue.
