Agreed - and tis why I put pixel(s) with a bracket round it!

Probably a whole row is affected, but the dark ones might be because one (or a few) are draining all the current from the row. Who can tell?

Might still be worth a punt, though... it's dead-and-paid-for camera, otherwise, innit?

Random long shot, here (I concede I have no experience of the GX20/K20D or its sensor), but is this basically a "stuck pixel" issue?

If so, when Philstaff gets the Samsung back, is it perhaps worth trying some of the (allegedly folklore) tricks cited on Wikipedia to try and 'unstick' the pixel(s)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defective_pixel - scroll down to the section headed "Stuck versus dead pixels".

My apologies if these are all a total waste of time, but once you've got the credit note in your hand, it'd seem worth a try, wouldn't it? Nothing finer in the world than getting a refund and then fixing the junk yourself, is there?
Note, that Wiki page relates to LCD screens (as in computer monitors and the like), not camera sensors. Totally different kettle of fish.

EDIT: At least, the bit about stuck pixels does.

Well spotted, Daniel - you are quite right. Dunno whether the techique of colour cycling might still be worth a go. And if the thing was scrap, I might be tempted to see whether any 'adjustment' of the sensor (i.e. a bit light pressure) made any difference at all... but of course, it comes with risks, obviously.

If the 'tricks' are completely irrelevant/useless, I refer the honourable member to the enclosed 'pre-apology' I gave some moments ago!

Don't forget the sensor is covered anyway, so you can't apply a bit of pressure to it in the way you envisage. Also, it's not made in the same way anyway. It's a chip, whereas an LCD screen is a liquid crystal display. Totally different things.
Best regards, John

I'm not thinking LCD screen squeezability here; no moiré fringe pressure/stress patterns, or stuff like that. I was thinking more literally, in terms of 'engineer's adjuster'.... like the TV knock, or a tap with 'ye olde Mark 1 fist' - but on a smaller scale.

All that presumes the unit is paid-for 'scrap', though, of course.

Yes, I know. Please. Stop embarrassing me! I used to be a test engineer (back in the dark ages before video-games, computer-journalism and IT consultancy). Sadly, I just leapt on the 'Stuck Pixel' tips thinking they were likely relevant to sensors - because that was where my mind was at the time... I had forgotten completely about LCDs and their own subtle variation on the theme. Dammit!

Having said that, they aren't actually totally different things in truth. There are a surprising number of parallels, but, er, their modus operandi is backwards. Row/grid matrices do suffer from similar 'complaints' sometimes, regardless of their final function... but I digress (and wriggle, defensively ). You are right that they're different enough, certainly, to make it unlikely to be able to 'squeeze' the stuck pixel out like a zit (which is sometimes possible with an LCD screen, if you're brave).

And I'd still be curious to find out what the effects might be of leaving the shutter open on a long exposure with the lens cap on for a few minutes. Sometimes the equivalent of a 'good kick up the a**e' can render all kinds of magic to a pixel - sensor or display - tbh.

That's the problem, there is a filter infront of the sensor to protect it also LCD stand for liquid crystal display and there is nothing liquid about sensor so you will damage them when trying to rub them.

Well it did not turn out as I had hoped as Currys insisted the camera was returnd to them before giving me the credit voucher for the full value of the camera. Seems the guy at Samsung should not have suggested that I may keep the camera as Currys needed the unit to send back to Samsung to claim there loss which seems fair enough bit gutted though. However Im just pleased a line can be drawn under the whole thing now but wished on reflection I had purchased the k20 you live and learn though.
