Light & Shade in Norwich Cathedral

Now for a few from the inside of Norwich Cathedral. Whether by design or lucky accident (I suspect the former), a bright day outside brings some striking effects inside. Here are some examples. All with K3 + 16-85mm, handheld.

We were actually very lucky to see the organ like that. Unknown to us at the time, it is in the middle of a huge restoration project. Most of the pipes were removed for whatever organ restorers do to them and the instrument was surrounded by scaffolding. The pipes were reinstated and the scaffolding removed only a couple of weeks before we were there. And the pipes that you see have been re-gilded, so that bright golden colour really is the colour of gold. What's left to do is the noisy bit - fine-tuning each of the 5,767 pipes. That started shortly after our visit and will take a couple of months .

What a splendid window, and the way organ pipes are catching the light - superb!

I expect you (and others) probably to disagree but, from my comments in other threads, you might realise that I would like to bring a bit more out of the darkness around the window - rather similar to the level around the glowing organ pipes. And regarding the latter image - it looks as though it needs a slight clockwise rotation.

The candle and organ pipes is a crackingly good image.

If you don't mind I had a little play with it. May not be what you wanted to portray, but I had a go at bringing out a little more detail in the shadows.

Thanks. No objection at all to you playing with it, Peter. I was wondering about lightening the candle and leaving the pillars as in the original but didn't have time to try it (the set was processed as a distraction during the run-up to a medical appointment that I wasn't looking forward to ).

Thanks. Yes, you may be right about the darkness around the window. What I'd really like to do is to bring up the candlesticks and cross, I hardly noticed them when pressing the shutter button but seeing them on screen they seem to be rather more important for the picture than I realised at the time. And you're right about the last picture looking like it needs a clockwise rotation. I had aligned the top of the candle (as the centre of the picture) with a vertical grid line, but having looked more closely I'm now thinking that the candle is slightly bent.

Now that the medical appointment is over (and with a rather better result than it might have been) I'll have another go at this set - and also some more pictures from the cathedral .
