Lenses for an SFX-N

Hi Guys, looking for some help.
I have a SFX-N which I still love and with the advent of E-Bay, I thought I would add another lens to my collection!
However I am finding V V V confusing as to whether the lens will fit/function on mine, Are all these a K mount?
eg An FA lens?
An AL lens
An FJ lens
An A lens

Any help would be most appreciated

Most Pentax lenses will function Ok on your camera.

A lenses are manual focus.
FA lenses are autofocus
AL means a lens has aspheric elements
FAJ lenses have no aperture ring and so are not a good choice for you.

All the above lenses are variations of the K mount.

All K mount lenses will fit on your camera and work to some extent.

The oldest (SMC, SMC M) will work in manual and aperture priority mode, manual focus

SMC A will work in all exposure modes, manual focus

SMC F & FA and FA D will work in all modes, manual and autofocus

SMC FA J don't have an aperture ring and so can only really be used in program or shutter priority modes, auto or manual focus

SMC DA will work as FA J but will vignette (dark corners) at some focal lengths because they are designed for the smaller sensor of the digital cameras

AL just indicates the use of aspherical elements in the lens - it has nothing to do with lens compatibility

To simplify things a little for you, your best bet is either an F lens (current when your camera was in production) or one from the later FA range.
Some of the FAs had an auto zoom function but you won't be able to use that facility on your SFX.

If you'd like a manual-focus lens, an A series model will work perfectly.

I use my SFXn all the time with my M lenses as well, because it has the aperture coupling that is missing in the digital series and makes it such a joy to use the aperture ring. And the autofocus is not bad at all, considering it was so early in the game.

I find the SFXn a great film body to complement my *ist DS!

I think the SFX/SFXn is a much maligned camera, the build quality is superb and it feels reassuringly heavy and solid. The AF is slow by today's standard (no predictive or multi-point) but is none the less precise and the centre-weighted metering requires careful use to get the best results but it works well and has a generous set of auto modes as well as full manual.

Even today, I think the SF range represents a good introduction to AF SLR photography and the level of user input makes it a valuable learning tool.

Construction quality is better than any subsequent camera (MZ-S perhaps excepted), and it's relatively simple. I'd hate to give a Z1 or MZ-S to a novice.

And in ordinary daylight, the AF performs just as well as any other camera. It's low light and blank walls that catch it out - just like any other camera!

I suspect it will outlast all subsequent AF cameras, too.
