Lensbaby Composer

Does anyone have one of these? I was thinking of getting it as a 'quirky' portrait lens (with the DA50 and DFA 100 I'm sorted for 'merely' sharp portrait lenses!), but north of £150 is a lot for quirky!

I believe Hefty has another version of this lens.
It looks like a fun thing to play with but for the rest?

Try looking at Lilly's web site or Flickr page, she makes good use of her lensbaby. Personally I find it hard to get good results. I would also say that having bought the wide angle conversion kit they don't do coatings the way Pentax do

I bought mine used for £70. They are very simple so there's not much to go wrong.

For portraits you'd probably want the one where you can lock focus so that is more expensive.

I sold mine on as I wasn't using it enough. It can be quite fun but it never found a permanent place in my camera bag...

I have one of the previous versions (The Lensbaby 2.0) which I bought second hand from a forum member.

Its quite a tricky thing to get right (I agree with mikew you need the control freak version) but I have got (in my opinion) some quite good results from it.

As for portraits, yes it would work and give some interesting effects but you need something in the background to blur, so it wouldn't be much use on white / plain backgrounds.

Below is a link to a cheesy picture of my son contemplating climbing a slide, but it does illustrate the lensbaby's ability to isolate the subject with the blur it creates in a portrait situation.

Well the Composer has (*gasp*) a focus ring, so hopefully I should be OK on the focus-locking front

Well I don't have a dedicated studio, so there is a reasonable chance of there being something in the background to blur!

That's what's holding me back to be honest: while it seems like a fun lens, I'm not sure that it's really "fun" enough to get into my bag as a portrait lens ahead of my DFA 50.

That's a lovely shot, not cheesy at all, which illustrates the lens very well

I don't think it is cheesy at all, although I have now for the first time visited facebook. I had hoped to live the rest of my days without visiting facebook...

That's gotta smart.

At least it's the weekend soon.

Get with the program Kris, Facebook is great!

Okay, maybe not 'great' but it is certainly very useful for all those casual friends and acquaintances who you don't necessarily want to conduct a one-on-one conversation with.

Even my dear old mother signed up for it last week (imagine my surprise when I received a friend request from her!).

The "Facebook niche", it allows you to conduct friendships with people who aren't your friend, whilst also acting as a storage space for every embarrassing photo of you, ever.

Yep, they are the digital equivalent of your pub mates People you'd never invite round to your house, but will chat with in the pub.

Quite a good networking tool too, if that's important in your line of work.

Spot on.

In fact, they should rename it E-Pub or something.

I have enough problems just keeping up with emails (several hundred a day in term time) and this site without adding another source of mass communication to the mix. I miss the time when people used to send me a postcard from their holidays. Now I get a bulk-written email and links to 3000 dire photos of people standing in front of various interesting things (I cannot tell what they are because they are standing in front of them) and photos of the amazing supper they had one night on the Costa del Puke.

Mutter mutter mutter...
