Just noticed that my Pentax-FA 1:1.4 50mm rattles slightly when shaken lengthways. The rattle happens regardless of aperture setting.

Is this normal or is something amiss?

Thanks

Sound still present when mounted, and appears o be internal as i cant stop it by holding any part of the lens while shaking it.

Any help would be much appreciated

Are you sure it's the lens, the shake reduction in the camera can make a rattling sound you see.

Hi, Definitely the lens, was almost caught out by the SR but the rattle persists when the lens is not mounted, and even with the aperture actuator held in place.

Check the rear element locking ring. I bought a 28mm off ebay and it rattled, turned out the locking ring had unscrewed slightly allowing the rear element to rattle.

I asked SRS about this with another lens and they said that sometimes you get a small amount of movement within the lens. The lens in question produces superb results and so I don't worry (much).

Try taking hold of the filter ring and try to waggle the lens, you may find some lateral movement.

If the results from the lens are OK why worry?

Lens does seem to be performing fine. Small amount of movement in the aperture ring but not enough to explain the noise.

Doik: how can i get access to the rear element locking ring, there doesnt seem to be any easy way?

Will keep poking around to see whats happening.

Thanks for the help

The damaged ring is the locking ring, it can be seen on Clarky's photo LINK

(Picks up Fa 50 and shakes it) Yup mine has a small rattle too. Works fine though.

I was told that the rattle in some 50mm lenses is due to the ball bearings in the aperture mechanism. It's totally normal.
Best regards, John

Interesting you should say that as the aperture ring feels very knotchy, can anyone with an fa 50 say whether this is normal?

Oggy: thanks for that

One notch at 1.4, another at 1.7, another at 2.0? Yes - mine has that.

My FA50mm 1.4 rattles slightly too. Also produces lovely images. Never worried about it myself.
