Hi folks,it's a while since I last posted on here but here goes with my question.
I have the K100D,but i'm thinking of getting the K10D now.Are the lenses I have for the K100D compatable with the K10D,or will I need to get new lenses to use the K10D?
I'm asking this question, due to specs on cameras saying that the K100D is a KAF fitting where as the K10D is mentioned as being KAF2.
The K100D has a Kaf2 mount like the K10D. Your auto-focus lenses will work perfectly on the latter.Hi folks,it's a while since I last posted on here but here goes with my question.

The only difference between the two is that the K10D has additional contacts to enable it to use the yet-to-be released SDM lenses (which have a focussing motor within the lens).

Here's another question.
Just been price negotiating with a local store, and I get a K10D with the sigma 170-500 for £977,plus they'll also give me around £100-£120 for my K100D body.
Is this a decent deal?

I'd be inclined to put it on ebay as a K100D body just fetched around £200. So if you are in no hurry that would be a better option. Failing that I will give you £120 for it.

I'll be intouch Hazza, only prob with my K100D is that it has got muck inside the viewfinder(aint got a clue how that happened)also the sensor needs a clean.

The only difference between the KAF and KAF2 mounts is an additional two contacts inside the lens mount. This was added to provide the power for the power zoom lenses. On digital bodies it'll be used for SDM power to the new SDM equipped lenses.

I'm not sure you are correct, and certainly Boz's site is a bit confusing on this issue. The only difference between the KAF and KAF2 mounts is an additional two contacts inside the lens mount. I think that Kaf2 is the same as Kaf, but with the addition of more lens information being transferred to the body (eg: MTF data). The change corresponded with the change from F lenses to FA lenses.
At the same time, most bodies were equipped with the two contacts to supply power to zoom lenses.
Later, these contacts were dropped from some bodies, including the ist series, but that didn't mean the mounts reverted to Kaf. They were still Kaf2.

I'll bow to your (always) superior knowledge George.Mannesty wrote:

I may have summarised my description biased towards the OP's confusion/misunderstaning/'doesn't have a clue' about his lenses and the KAF2 mount. They'll work fine.

Woah sorry guys, didn't mean to start an argument.
I only asked because I thought they might be different fittings.

No argument. People here know that I never get involved in arguments, and Peter doesn't very often.Woah sorry guys, didn't mean to start an argument.

But for your information, all Pentax K-mount lenses fit all Pentax K-mount bodies, and (with one or two exceptions) all non-Pentax K-mount lenses fit all K-mount bodies.
However, although they will fit on, most modern lenses won't work on film bodies that are over twenty one years old (and the more recently deceased LX) because there is no way for the older body to set the aperture on the lens.
And similarly, some modernish film bodies won't be able to set the aperture on very old lenses.
But any Pentax digital camera will work, with some limitations in some cases, with ALL Pentax K-mount lenses.

Definitely no argument. If I can't win it, I ain't in it.
George's information is almost certainly more complete/accurate than mine. My posts related only to the compatibility of your lenses with the K10D and were more along the lines of "There's only one way to kill a mole . . . "
I didn't even know what MTF was until recently . . . even now . . . I've forgotten. (I just looked it up) In simple terms, I think it means that when a camera body is set to choose the sharpest aperture, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is used to determine it. The aperture chosen will correspond to the lenses maximum resolution/sharpness capability, which differs at different apertures. Put even more simply, any lens will have a particular aperture that can resolve more detail than it can at any other setting. The lens will have some kind of MTF map inside it and the camera uses this information to select the aperture it needs to produce the sharpest result possible . . . I think.
More info here .
If that isn't enough info, George'll be along in a minute with the defacto standard definition
PS: If you really want to avoid an argument, start putting spaces after your punctuation.

Thanks guys. I'm now in a too much information overload.
So unless i'm wrong here?I don't need to look at the letters or numbers that came after the 1st K forget the af or af2,the actual mounting is a k mounting?

To be brief, all new K-mount (ie Pentax-fitting) lenses will work fine. Thanks guys. I'm now in a too much information overload.

Avoid old lenses without an A on the aperture ring (if made by Pentax they will have a suffix of M, or none at all (eg SMC Pentax-M), unless you don't mind losing a bit of automation - you have to use them in manual exposure mode.

Not sure if this isn't what is causing Themightyimp's confusion George because the K100D manual clearly states that it is a KAF mount. Is that a misprint maybe? B. Dimitrov's K mount page probably more accurately describes it as a "crippled" KAF2 mount probably because it doesn't support power zoom. The K100D has a Kaf2 mount like the K10D. G

No kidding information overload. Forget about the MTF red herring and go to the best source of Pentax equipment compatability at http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/ and you will see for yourself that both George's and Peter's short answers are correct. Your lenses will work the same as they did on your K100D. Thanks guys. I'm now in a too much information overload.

BTW: That's where George gets all his information from.
Indeed, some of our contributors actually take pictures just for the fun of it. You may doubt me, but it is true. - G
