Lens filters

Hi folks, 10 years or so ago I used a film SLR and always had a UV filter on the lens just for protection. I also
used a circular polapolarizing filter and a close up filter from time to time.
Untill recently I'd given up on the SLR and used various types of compacts and bridge cameras (without lens filters).
I have at long last bought a used SLR (K10D) and bought a sigma 17-70 from another forum member. I was wondering how relevant lens filters are now in the Photoshop age and if other forum members used them at all, if so can you recommend which type and make are best value/image quality.

No filters necessary, but always use a lens hood.

The exception might be the polariser, which cannot be done post capture, and perhaps graduated ND filters for landscapes.

Opinion is divided. Personally - I would much sooner have a UV filter on a lens to protect the front element if for no other reason.

Plus - for me a CPL and ND grads go everywhere with me.

Personally I think that a CPL is a must have but be careful with UWA lenses as the effect can get a bit extreme in the corners, and I have a variety of grad NDs for landscapes.

Most of my lenses do have a protector on the front just for safety, except for my HD DA 55-300 WR which really doesn't like any glass on the front of it. It's the only one of my lenses that seems to be particularly sensitive, but there must be others out there.

As with John, I also always have the lens hood on.

Filter or no filter always keep the lens hood on. So many people leave the hood on back to front just because the sun isn't shining and no chance of "glare". The hood is good protection. I don't fit filters unless needed. CPL. ND. etc.

Vic, I also have a bike and feel i'm getting old, do you take the SLR when your out on the cycle ?

Hi, stewcoo. I only take the bike (a little Honda 250) out on really nice warm sunny days. Yes I take one of my DSLR's with me depending where I'm going. If you feel your getting old just remember it's all in the mind. "I'm approx. 21", but from time to time my 75yr. old body says sod off I can't do that anymore.

Another vote for using the hood for front element protection and CPL/ND etc when needed.
