LED on-camera lighting systems

Took a look at the rotolight website today www.rotolight.com. Was interested in its ability to be mounted on top of a DSLR. also looked at other LED camera mounted kits. Now I understand it is aimed at the camcorder market and at DSLRs that take movies, but what about taking stills?

anyone aNY EXPEREINCE OF USING ONE OF THESE WHEN TAKING STILLS INSTEAD OF USING A flash?

There's no reason you couldn't use a continuous light instead of a flash. Downside is, it will only have a very short throw before it ends-up looking like a torch, so suitable only for close-up work - the intended use of such products is for talking-heads at about 1m range.


But - AMG! How can anyone advertise a light for video use with such dreadful lighting on the women's hair!

The product itself is just yet-another LED PAG-type light, designed for use on DV-cams by briefly-trained runners for use in daytime television. Just what the world needs...

Curious. I bought a very similar unit from Wilkinsons to light my shed, and only £3.99.

To save you counting them all, there are 48 LED's, the same as the Rotolight. No colour correction filters of course.

The black button is the power switch which cycles the lamp pattern from Off > Outer ring only > Inner ring only > both rings > Off.

Have used the exact same light for my shots, very useful.

I've just ordered one of these 72 LED lights from Amazon £9.99 free del.

They also have an AmTech one for £3.48. It might be the same, but, I've see the Rolson one and was quite impressed so that's the one I've gone for.

What abour the LED ring lights advertised on eBay? Any experience on these for macro work? They seem a lot cheaper than a ring flash...

Terry, do you mean this type link as I was wondering if they were any good for macro shots.

Well I bought this ring light Tom, not used them in earnest yet but they are OK for the price, they are good if you use manual focus as you can see the subject much clearer to focus, they give a slightly blue light but you can correct in your software,

Cheers for the info Jack, I was thinking of trying one on the DFA 100mm for Butterflies and other insects, thats if they stay around long enough for a shot
