As for the pic, photographic judges will tell you that the bud on the left (in the original) will lead the eye out of the picture so the crop was the right thing to do. I dont mind the green, as long as I dont have to mow it I'm happy.
I think the only thing that spoils this is that out of focus reddish leaf behind the bud, should have pruned that before you snapped this
I see some don't like the green background, even suggesting coloured cards to change it. I can understand that when shooting indoors, or against a brick wall. But when you can have nature's own colours as a backdrop, I personally don't see any reason to change it.
And with the (imho) nice bokeh, I don't feel the green lawn is distracting.
But I do agree with you, impotentspider, the reddish branch should have been removed.
