Thank you i-Berg (I don't know what a "Pentax Pro Master" is, but it certainly conveys an importance). I will have the lens looked into.

But you say this particular lens cycles itself when you engage the auto-focus function, but does not lock on at all? I'd be taking the lens in for a look.
But locking on seems to be a fault of the AF-module in the camera though. But you say this particular lens cycles itself when you engage the auto-focus function, but does not lock on at all? I'd be taking the lens in for a look.
The only thing the lens has to do is moving the focus around and it does that and it's the job of the camera to stop the AF motor when it gets a focus and that doesn't seem to happen.
A final test might be to use the AF contrast in liveview mode and see if it does focus with that, if it does then it's probably your camera.

I have been away for a time, so apologize for not getting back to you Stefan.
After I install the 16-50 lens on the K-x and turn the camera control switch ON, I can take a single shot in Auto, with the subject in focus. After that no more pictures can be taken, even if I turn the camera control switch OFF and then ON again. If I shift to Live view there is no difference. As I mentioned before, the K-x works well in Auto with other lenses, and the Pentax 16-50 lens works well with a K-5.
Even so, thanks for the idea.

Another thought. What batteries are you using?
Could be that the power is just too low to run the 16-50 for some reason?
If you're using rechargeables they'll be 1.2v.
Try non-rechargeable Lithium batteries. They run at a full 1.5v as normal.

Reading through various threads here, it appears that on occasion, some people have 'loosened up' a lens by turning the focus ring gently from lock to lock a few times (off camera).
But you say this particular lens cycles itself when you engage the auto-focus function, but does not lock on at all? I'd be taking the lens in for a look.
If the lens won't work on a Kx body, but will on the K5, then that's not satisfactory. That the AF motor in the K5 is stronger would be no reason to accept this as sufficient performance on the part of the lens.
