Well as you can tell, I am no Birder
It could be a sparrowhawk they are about round there I think, I'll take a look on RSPB identifier
Edit: Yes it would fit the description and images spot on, Sparrowhawk it is then, unless anyone else knows better.

No question that the bird in question is, as noted by swifter respondents, a male sparrowhawk.

I was at Carsington, nothing close enough to get a decent shot with the 100-300 with 1.4TC. Just about to pack up when I saw this Kestrel land on this post. Quietly opened the hide window and managed to get a few frames before it shot off.
