I don't think it's the mono conversion that's at fault here. The poses & lighting are both way off. If the composition was good in the first place & the lighting wasn't so harsh then you could take a look at fiddling with the B&W.
Andy, the built in flash is never going to give brilliant results in these sort of settings & is best reserved for some fill lighting when shot into strong light. I think here you may have been better served by exposing for the background (ie: meter the background with the flash down, then use manual shooting mode & dial in the aperture & s/s that was indicated when you metered) I think this would have resulted in a more evenly exposed photo but you may well have had to raise the iso a fair bit if you were handholding.
A lens with a wide aperture (f2 or lower) would serve you well in these situations, as would a flash that you could bounce or use off camera.
If Kerry is willing to pose for photos for you then you have a great start - a little technique & a lot of practice will stand you in good stead & when you've cracked it I'm sure you'll notice by the smile on your models face !
I'm trying to be helpful Andy rather than harsh. Hope it sounds that way, and I don't profess to being an expert either ! I'm sure further advice will follow.

Thanks everyone. I like your attempt John and no I dont take offence RR.
Ime here to learn after all!
Unfortunately I don't yet own a external flash but ime looking to get one. I think you are right about bouncing the light, after all it was all white around
But I dont understand what metering the background would achive? Could you explain that one please?
