hey, all! I noticed my new k7 is on firmware 1.0....or whatever. Was thinking about updating, but are the firmware changes worth it? I think it's kind of a scary thing to do.....

It's worth it. Details are here: http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-7_s.html

It's not at all risky as long as your battery is well charged.

Absolutely worth it James, as Pete says.

Edit: Apart from the other enhancements, I particularly appreciate and make use of the following option to AF point selection.

Operate at AF point “SEL”] on [Custom] menu and it can be selected either [1 Calling Function Preference] or [2 Select AF point Preference].
When selected [2 Select AF point Preference] and AF point switching dial is set at [SEL], selection of AF point can be operated priority by the four-way controller.
