Taken today at ISO 1600

Next is straight from camera with no noise reduction and only auto levels in PS.

Nice.
Being used to only high ISo/low light situations, it is surprising how good high ISO can look with sufficient light. It would be interesting to compare with lower ISO.

Although on the first I'd probably crop in a bit closer and get rid of the out of focus leaf at the bottom. The leaf behind the top of the flower is awfully bright and conflicts for attention with the red. Probably try to darken down.

For the second, a reflector might help to brighten up the shadows, or use photoshop to brighten them up a bit.

Otherwise I like them.

Is there a reason for shooting at ISO 1600 in strong sunlight?

Smaller apertures with faster shutter speeds is useful. Interesting experiment. I think I would limit myself to 800 on my camera though.

You're kidding right? He lives in the middle east and said "strong sunlight". I'm surprised the shutter speed was as slow as 1/1500.

You got in there before I went back to edit my comment! Well I presume if you are grabbing a shot with a very long lens, it is useful to know you can up the iso.

For ISO 1600 i am astonished! I feel guilty if i have to creep up to ISO 250!. As for the shots, I am impressed as the way that the delicate detail has been reproduced in the first image however i find the bright out of focus highlights in both shots draw my eye away from the main subject. Still who could resist taking a shot in such lovely sunshine?

Yes that is true, I was just a bit confused as to the purpose of this experiment. I have always been told by wiser heads than myself that high ISO photos show far less noise when properly exposed (to the right if possible). Doing that in a dark concert hall is difficult, doing it in sunlight is easy.

Images were taken purely as an exercise to see what ISO 1600 produced in good light. I have normally used low ISO in such light but if you don't try, you don't know.

Lens was the Pentax A50mm f/2.8 macro.

Its good to see these results from the K7. Although, what stops me from investing in one is its dynamic range, its about one stop less than the K20D I think.
I'll wait for the K8.

Pauly, I didn't realise that! Dynamic range ( particularly at the white end, is my personal bete-noir (how the hell do you get accents on this thing?). But just look at what's achievable at 1600 ASA! Quite remarkable. What on earth was the shutter speed?

Could have done with this low-light facility yesterday on my latest expedition...

Andrew
