Anyway I made a quantum leap in the sharpness department today and it cost me the princely sum of £2 ... and I mean a HUGE leap in sharpness.
Went out with the wife this morning and after noticing a few problems with my eyes I bought a pair of reading glasses ... I am absolutely gobsmacked at the difference in my pictures on the laptop.
Go back and try it with your specs on Mike, and give us a definitive answer

I actually said that the IIs does produce a slightly sharper output but that for the actual difference it was not worth the extra cash to me.I've yet to hear of someone trade in their IIs for a II, or hear of someone who has gone to the trouble of spending their money on buying a IIs regret doing so. Mike, Gary, none of what I put was aimed at you Lads. It wasn't aimed at anyone!
I'm not saying that anyone who bought a II made a bad choice or that anyone who bought a IIs made the right choice, each to their own
And whenever I put my *geggers on it's like the whole world is in HD!! So the best aid to camera sharpness is a good pair of specs Lol!!
*geggers=glass's

Gary you make a really valid point from a commercial viewpoint. My keeper rate has also sky rocketed and I am now starting to get work published. I would like to see pentax release some new glass rather than just new bodies though. I purchased the K5lls as I currently don't need to go full frame, but I wanted the best image quality I could get from an APS-C camera, I think the body of the K7 is just so right, for me the refinements of the K5ll and K5lls make it a very versatile camera that just delivers the quality I was looking for and I think it is making people have a slightly more positive look at Pentax.

Even if the next body isnt full frame i hope they keep the k-5 body design and upgrade the processor and add a second sdhc slot. The processr I thinkmis now the weakest link, the k-5 is such a responsive speed merchant and then the speed gets throttled by the now ancient processing engine.
A couple of my fellow pros have had a go of my mkii and they usually shoot with highend canons and nikons and have been very impressed with the af and shooting speed of it.

Going back to the original question i think we all agree the mkii and mkiis are superb cameras.

The glasses I currently wear, while being bang on prescription for everything else, have the ability to automatically detect an image taken with the K-5IIs and blur it down so there's only a slight difference in IQ between the K-5II.

Couldn't agree more. Plenty of times I've had to wait for the buffer to clear

Perhaps the frequent debates on whether the K5IIs takes pictures with higher detail than the K5/K5II or not, arise because people are using different lenses? And the many "test" pictures are taken with a variety of lenses.
I use the K5IIs with the Zeiss distagon 28/2 and 35/2, which I used on the K5 before I got the K5IIs. To my eyes, the images with the K5IIs are much crisper, and I cannot produce the same crispness and clarity from K5 raw files, no matter what sharpening routines. Especially the clarity that the K5IIs produces with the two Zeiss lenses is unique, and I quickly sold my K5. I have not used the K5II though, which is rumored to feature a lighter (thinner) AA-filter than the older K5, more on par with the K-30. I don't believe there are any official statements from Pentax itself on this though.
Anyway, I would advice anyone with higher grade lenses to at least try out the K5IIs for themselves, it is for me the first camera, that I will most probably not upgrade anymore, but simply shoot until it stops working. I think it's thát good.
regards
Chris

With the same lenses, the iis takes more detailed images, you are right that the same effect cannot be achieved by simply sharpening the K-5 images. I have noticed this most particularly with images taken at weddings. I use only two lenses on these shoots; the DA 17-70 and the Sigma 105mm DG EX Macro, both very sharp optics. Those shot with the iis are noticeably better and this follows through the PP process - the resulting iis images are better after processing. I'm basing this on thousands of images shot, not just a few.

No one is arguing that the IIs doesn't take more detailed images.

I have also never said there is not a difference between image output, there is although minute, but for the price difference it would be cheaper to actually buy a mkii and a copy of lightroom and still have cash left over and the copy of lightroom could sharpen the mkii images to the same as the mkiis.
Like Mike i have also heavily invested in glass and can afford the mkiis but just could not justify it from a commercial viewpoint and usually any improvements to any body I weigh up on a commercial basis. Since buying the mkii my keeper rate has sky rocketed and my published work rate has also blossomed too. My commercial clients are also impressed with the work i present to them, so I think and I know I made the right choice.
Good to see the needle is still stuck! Some people cant see a point in pencils as crayons do the same thing!
I've yet to hear of someone trade in their IIs for a II, or hear of someone who has gone to the trouble of spending their money on buying a IIs regret doing so. On paper the IIs should produce better results, and it does. On paper the IIs should produce finer detail, and it does. The paper I mention is made by hahnemuhle And before the same people start bleating on, my neighbour HAD the II and we did a simple test and printed the resulting image's out and gave those image's to our respective wives, and they both picked the same image's, the same image's that we had both decided were the better all round image's. He rang SRS not too long after and got a good deal on trading in his II against a IIs.
Going back to the food analogy, I guess some people out there will read a recipe and decided then a there that it tastes horrible. Now would you take their word over the word of someone who went to the trouble of actually eating and tasting that recipe? I know we don't all have the same taste's, but in general we do don't we? Do you like cheese?
