K5 vs. D7000 & EOS60D

Comparisons between these three cameras images on DPReview here:

link

The K5 is looking class beating in RAW (not so bothered about jpegs) at high ISO 1600+. Though to my eye it does look slightly softer than the others between 200-800. There is little difference between the cameras at 100 (apart from the rendering of black). Edit: This actually depends on where you look in the image - in some places the K5 looks softer at 100 too.

Does the performance between 200-800 bear any connection with impressions arising from Amoringello's post comparing K5/7 images? Has some detail been sacrificed for less noise with the new sensor?

Interesting, but if DPReview are skewing in favour of Canon then shouldn't the Nikon images be similarly affected?

Though, as ever, it's right to be sceptical about the results of these type of comparative tests. Testers should surely use a third party lens in different mounts (but never do) for a more useful comparison - though even then there might be differences between individual lenses.

I'm not that bothered about ultra scientific tests.

Isn't the K5 aimed/placed higher than those two, closer to the Nikon D300s and the Canon 7D?

I was just looking at this and was about to start a post.
Interesting results.
We have to take into consideration that they are only jpgs, but the Nikon overtly smooths with the NR on, with NR off, they are not good.
The Pentax is interesting, at high ISO's they are noisy, but no Chroma noise (that blue and red speckled effect) Most impressive and something that could be used.
Would be interesting to compare RAW files, and I think the K-5 will be a killer in this aspect.
The 60D is nowhere to be seen compared to the D7000 and K-5.

Will be interesting to compare to the D300s and 7D as Stefan said. But I have a feeling that the K-5 will have them both licked too. Worringly for Nikon though, I think the D7000 will have the D300s licked too.

Still, will be interesting to see shots in the real world.

So we won't see any further mention of the DXO results.

I agree with you totally. Real world for me being outside of a studio. No disrespect for any using a studio, it's only my look at it.

Possibly not. If you look at the comments from Rocky Rockwell wrt the 300 and 300S, he says that those and all other Dx bodies are now wasted by the D7000. 1 or 2 fps speed of the 300/300S does not make up for the faster AF and cleaner hi ISO images of the D7000.

I don't have much to say about the Canon. Odd metering and it's heavier than the FF 5D MkII. It certainly does not come close to the K5 or D7000 for build quality and overall functionality.

Sorry Gary i haven't said it so well, i meant the class of those cameras.
The D7000 is replacing the D90 if i'm correct and the D400 will replace the D300 next year. That means in terms the D7000 can be seen as an entry advance amateur camera The same as the Canon 50D & 60D. It seems that Pentax is aiming to place the K5 slightly above those more in line with the D300s, D400 & 7D.
The D7000 is interesting to compare it with because of the sensor for the rest i would like to see it compared with the D300s & 7D in terms of handling because they are in the same class.

Tests are imperfect, Smeggypants, but they are useful in so far as they reflect what we might be using in the real world. Also the performance - or the perceived performance - of a K5 or KR has important ramifications for the long term health of Pentax - which we all have an interest in.

Offertonhatter - you can compare RAW files on a different page (and the 300S & 7D) through the drop down menus.

Stefan, I reckon that the D7000 will be one of the K5's main competitors, especially as its build is purportedly a step up from the D90. Though I don't think it will rival the K5's build and handling - one of the best in any class (not to say the smallest enthusiast SLR by a distance).

That's what I meant, it's above the D7000 in terms of build and handling and there fore a review with cameras with a comparable build and handling would be pleasant.
But i doubt that will happen.
The K5 will be placed against the D7000 and 60D, even though the K5 is better on most aspects wanna bet the 60D will win in most reviews.

at the moment the d7000 is more than the d300s.
will be interesting to see how it compares to things like af speed, as i still think its way behind the nikon d7000 af..

This one Supports 24p is a bit unfair because Pentax use 25p
