K5 PEF and FastStone

Hi to the group and a happy new year.

I recently took delivery of my K5 and have put a few shots through it using RAW.

Whilst I can view them using FastStone, it won't correctly output JPG's when asked to do a convert - it goes through the process but all I get at the end of it is a load of red boxes or in some cases a pinkish pattern. Oddly enough, PSE7 won't read the PEF's either, I've had to use the supplied Pentax software to convert the files from RAW to JPG then work on them.

Has anyone else had this issue? I've installed the latest version of FastStone and as far as I know, PSE7 is up to date.

Here's hoping...

Elements 7 will not read K-5 PEF files. You have to install the new Adobe Raw to enable it but that will only work with Elements 9

I just used to shoot in DNG format before upgrading to the new Elements.

Sadly the newest version of Adobe Camera Raw is not compatible with PSE7. SO you need to convert your Pefs to DNGs so you can deal with them in PSE7.

You can get a free converter from Adobe.

After that switch to shooting DNG all the time so you can process them in PSE7.

Agreed. I seem to remember some suggestion that PEF offered the optimum quality, but no-one has been able to see it, so if it does it's incredibly subtle.

Certainly with the K-5 DNG is the way to go - with the K20D DNGs are so much bigger than PEFS they eat memory cards for breakfast .

Thanks for all the responses, chaps!

Having switched the camera to DNG, I've just put a test shot through my usual workflow process and it all worked as expected, so I'll stick with it from now on.

In respect of the K5, it's going to take me ages to get to grips with it. A small experiment in London a few days ago has produced mixed results so far...
