K5 or K5II?

I am going to be upgrading from a K20D to a K5.

I don't know whether to go for the K5 or K5II, it seems to me that the only difference is the low light focusing capability. I am corrct in that or are there more advantages?

Also, as I am upgrading from K20 would I notice the difference between a K5 and K5II?

You're asking questions that few people can answer yet, but I can tell you that the K-5 is a significant jump in quality and speed of operation over the K20D.

I will be going from the K-7 (same sensor as K-20) to a K-5IIs.

No, that is correct but it will give you an idea of the capability of the K-5 (II(s))
Try some comparisons against the likes of the Canon 60D I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

buy the newest you can...I have a K20D and K-5 and I am still very happy with the K20D

The difference between the two are not that big tbh.

Video is probably the greatest difference between the K5 and the K5 II.
I would read this, as it applies to the K5 as well.
If that is enough to get by in video-mode, I would probably just get an okay second-hand K5, and use the difference on glass, or save it instead.

Comparing the K5 to the K5 IIs is a bit different though.
And here you need to know if the lack of the low-pass-filter will matter to you.

As I see it:
'K5 -> K5 II' - mainly tech upgrade, and the video mode.
'K5 -> K5 IIs' - same upgrades as to the K5 II, but this time also some noticable IQ improvement.

If you are comming from the K20D I think you would be more then happy with the K5, probably more so if you can get a bargain on a second hand one

MkII should have improved focus speed in general not just in lowlight...

If possible; and in your position I'd budget for the MkII and buy the K5 MkONE. Plus a shiny peice of glass!!

Source? I didn't think there was ANY change to the video mode between the K-5 and the K-5ii.

The only documented changes are to the Autofocus system and the rear screen. Certainly that's what Pentax's press releases & websites have stated and all the previews reported.

Probably my own keen interest in the GH3 for video that got me a bit carried away.

Looking closer back on some of my notes, it seems that the K-5II still have the same limitations as the make one had when it comes to video.

If anything that means whatever you did read on the link I gave should be valid.

This is so true.
Simply because the previews, and most of the first look stuff just ends up testing what the 'press releases' already stated, ignoring all the rest.
Shame really, as it doesn't paint the whole picture.

The autofocus difference between the k20d and the k-5 is a huge step up. Whilst I still use my gx20 I will be buying the k-5mkiis I think he removal of the aa filter will improve my gig work.

My k-5 doesn't hunt much at gigs but i think the lower light capability may make a little difference not a lot but enough for me to justify buying it

I think the small price difference between the k-5 and the mkii I wouldn't risk the thought of what if??? So go for mkii...

With the outgoing K-5 at £680 and the II launching at £800, I'd also go for the latter. Even leaving the promised low light AF improvement aside, I would expect to retain a large part of that extra £120 in resale value.

If the comparison is between secondhand K-5 at, say, £450 and a new II at £800 however, I'd have to seriously consider the older version.

For me then, the real choice is between a secondhand K-5 at £450 at a IIs at £950. But £500 does seem rather a large premium to pay to lose the AA filter (and get a two-year warranty, I know, I know, but I'm trying to convice myself to spend less!)

The other Forum has a K5IIs for testing, and the intial comparison shots against a K5 look really good, in favour of the IIs.

Interestingly they've gone out of their way to deliberatley get moire patterns; they got it on the K5, but it is worse on the IIs.

Just had a look at that. the comparison between the pictures of the building ( 1st comparison ) is not conforming to the differences I've seen in other independent comparisons. the colour balance and exposure are different for starters. And taken at different times of day. Not fooled

However the 2nd comparison of the plastic "pLay it safe" sign is comparable to the differences I've seen elsewbhere and trust that one more
