K5 iis - Diopter Adjustment Lever Missing

Hi all

The diopter adjustment lever on my well used K5iis has broken off leaving a sizeable slot above the eyepiece. As a temporary 'fix' I've stuck a piece of gaffer tape over the slot. I've looked online for a technical diagram to try and establish how serious a problem (my guess is very serious) this is with regard to dust and muck getting into the guts of the camera, but I haven't been able to find one. My question is, am I right to think this is a major issue or has lady luck smiled on me and somehow the adjuster is in a compartment sealed off from the camera innards and all I'll need is a new roll of gaffer tape as it doesn't seem to stick very well. Maybe it's just time for a new camera?

Grateful for any insights.

Cheers
Ian

I am pretty certain that the dioptre adjustment is a self-contained unit that just adjusts the eyepiece and is sealed off from the guts of the camera, so gaffer tape should do the trick. Plus, gaffer tape is marginally cheaper than a K3ii

How about a thin bead of black silicon to seal the hole, prob more permanent than gaffer and as easily removed if wished.

Not sure if it will help, but here's a link to a cross section of the camera LINK. Strange how vague memories from years ago can come to the surface...

Thanks Michael, I also like the way you think! I hoped that was the case as the lever didn’t seem to be weather sealed but I couldn’t find a schematic to confirm.

Good thinking, thanks Chris.

One certainly doesn't appreciate how complex the viewfinder assembly is !
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Which is exactly why I posted in the first place. Any thoughts?

After a bit of searching, I found this https://www.ephotozine.com/article/this-cutaway-diagram-shows-the-inside-of-a-ds... which gives some idea of the complexity of the viewfinder assembly. From what I can gather, the lever uses concave and convex lenses to adjust the eyepiece.

Since the viewfinder eyepiece/diopter adjustment mechanism is above the focusing screen, the chance of dust creeping down all the way to the sensor and AF sensor is rather slim. On the other hand, I'd be worried about moisture and condensation building up in the viewfinder if you use the camera in rainy weather, so I'd go with a dab of silicone to seal the opening.

Morning all,
Just a quick update to thank you all for your advice on the diopter adjustment problem. More in hope than expectation as I know Pentax stopped making parts for the K5iis ages ago, I contacted the service agent John Pye Technical and explained my problem. A couple of days later a new lever arrived at my door for a very reasonable price, but neither I nor the technician I spoke to knew if it was simply a matter of clipping it into place or if there was some internal fitment that was also required. It was easy peasy to fit, works a treat and my camera is restored to the well used but completely functional bit of kit it was before.
Thanks again for your help, and a big shout out to John Pye Technical!

Cheers
Ian
