K5 Focus / Focus Screen Question

Hi all - Sorry I've not been around for a while.

My son has a K5 (Mk1) and I'm not sure if there's a focusing issue with it.

When the focus is set to single point and then focused on an object the red focus square focuses to the left of centre when looking through the view finder, it's not by much but it's enough to notice. It's just about on the left hand 'open bracket' ( ) symbol that is in the middle of the standard focusing screen.

At first I thought he'd played around with the selective focus point setting but when I checked it was set to the middle.

I did a check by selecting different focus points, first to the left and then to the right of centre and something seems to have moved over as the focus points were to one side of the lines on the focusing screen.

Can the focus screen accidently move to one side and how do I check to see if it has actually moved?

Regards,

Chris.

P.S - Just done another check and does the same in manual focus too.

* Quick Update *

I've done a reset to default settings and it's still the same.

I have also done a few test shots and although the focus points aren't where they should be the image quality still looks fine.

So, to summarise the original problem....

When looking through the view finder all the focus points have moved over towards the left of the focusing screen.

The K5 is still under warranty from SRS, do I send it back to them to see if there's an underlying problem?

Regards,

Chris.

Are you sure the camera is set to centre point focus and it hasn't been set to select focus points? If that is the problem, then selecting an off centre focus point by mistake could be the answer.

If not, then a warranty repair or repair if it is a problem.
Best regards, John

The position of the focus indicator "panel" has been known to move. IIRC it was reported on Ricehigh's page some time back. It's certainly adjustable by a technician.

I had this happen with the K10. In my case the screen had become slightly decentred in its frame. If you feel confident, you could try lowering the frame and then carefully relocate the screen.

Google Pentax screen replacement for how to do this.

This can happen to any Pentax, this was the case with my k5iis,
also to the above problem/glitch, I could select 1,3,4,5 and 7 points of focus but not 11.... But this would happen unexpectedly... then Stop..
After firmware update ( second updated firmware) it stop so Pentax must have known...
k-5 IIs, Pentax 60-250, 17-70, 100macro WR, 50mm F2,

Hi John,

This was the first thing I checked and it wasn't the cause of the problem.

I have spoken to SRS today and as the K5 is still in warranty they have said to return it to them for sending back to Pentax for a repair.

Chris.

** Update **

Hi all,

The K5 was returned to me today from SRS after a warranty repair at jp service solutions.

The included paperwork says ~ replaced mirror box - clean, check & test.

All seem to be working fine again. I don't know if it's just me but the auto focus seems a lot faster.

Regards,

Chris.

I do like a happy ending
Steve

Sometimes I'm serious and sometimes not, but I consider sarcasm an artform. Which is it today?
