The file you want in the root directory of your SD card is just the BIN file. The instructions are on the Ricoh website and need following exactly, but when I've done this there hasn't been a problem. I've always made sure only the BIN file was on the card when I put it in the camera.
Best regards, John

Many thanks John for your response.
I'll revisit the Ricoh site and see where I've gone wrong. Will keep you posted.

Actually, it might be easier to download the Mac version (which is just a ZIP file).
Unzip it, and place the resulting BIN file on the root directory of your SD card.

Hi,
If the double clicking on the download for the self extracting file doesn't work then the users computer operating system is corrupted in some way (sounds likely) or the download has corrupted (unlikely)
The easiest solution is to do the extraction on someone elses computer. Then as John says you just drag the BIN file to a blank SD card. I found in the past just using the root of the card (ie not in any folder) worked fine.
It is also best to seek help from someone used to downloading, extracting and moving files rather than stay frustrated with the process. It is understandable that not everyone does such operations often so may not understand the provided guide.

I sounds like you are using Windows 7. Don't worry about this error message it is simply asking if it is complete but as you are only extracting a file the process is quick and simple. Simply place the bin file on the root directory of the SD card alongside DCIM.

I got that message too.
The computer is complaining that, having received and extracted a BINary file, it expected this to have interacted with its own operating system (to install itself on the computer, for example). When this didn't happen, the computer threw a wobbly and told you about its fears and worries. Since THIS file isn't intended for the computer, its fears are groundless, but it isn't to know this! The file in front of you is intact and as it was intended to be.
I used the BIN file to update my own K5 firmware without a hitch only yesterday.

The much improved and faster Windows 8.1 is a free update to Windows 8 anyway. No idea why anyone would be using it.

Many thanks everyone for your comments. Following Bill's advice, today I took the camera to our local camera shop and a wonderful member of staff updated the firmware there and then. I watched and know that I'll be able to do it myself next time.

I'm new, please forgive mistakes...
Just tried to update the firmware on my K5, following Richoh instructions, pressed download(windows), then clicked the downloaded exe file... I then get this message from 'Programme Compatibility Assistant': "the programme might not have installed correctly" referring to:" Win SFx32M Self extractor Win 32 Microsoft"
It then gives me these options: "Install Using Compatability settins" or "this progrmme installed correctly"
I've tried all options using two different laptops as well as trying via Google Chrome and Explorer...
Hope this makes sense? Where am I going wrong? Has anyone else had this?
Many thanks
