K5 Enlargement Capture

It must be me! I can enlarge the shot in camera and select a particular area. What I cannot find a way of doing ( and two letters to Pentax having been unanswered,) is find a way of capturing the enlarged area to download to computer. It was so easy with Sony. I did read the instruction book; so, it must be me. Help from anyone, please.

It's all on page 264 of the manual.

I've never used this feature, finding it far more convenient to do it later on the computer using even the simplest of image processing software.

Play, down button (flash setting key) resize. Jpegs only. No idea why anyone would want to do it though!

horses for courses, some people find PP software on computers daunting, or want to make the change in the field while they still clearly remember what they were trying to achieve.

Personally, I would always do this sort of thing in RAWTherapee later, but I have been known to use the in camera development on my K10D when I want to give someone an image there and then.

Is it resize? ... I would have thought it was crop.

Just done it all on my K-5, both resize and crop.. all worked correctly!

My appologies if my post falls into the condecending category, that was not my intention (quite the oposite in fact), although on re-reading it comes off more clipped than I meant it to.

I wonder about what it does.

Does it take the JPG, crop it and resize, or does it go back to the RAW format (if available) and do the cropping and resize from that?

Please be advised that the built-in JPEG processor of the K5 isn't the best. Not a biggie to those who don't pixel-peep.

I presume you mean here the in-camera processing after capture. In which case I's agree and always use Photoshop for post processing.

However, it's worth mentioning that the Premium JPEGs produced by the camera are superb and I don't normally shoot anything else. This is not always true and some other manufacturers don't manage to produce JPEGs anywhere near as well as Pentax do. In the worst case I have found they were unusable.

John - coming from Olympus, I am not averse to shooting mostly JPEG, although with the K-5 I've not ventured from raw yet. Are there any particular JPEG settings that you find work best for you? I'm curious to experiment but not averse to shamelessly copying from someone else as my starting point!

Basically the best quality and the most pixels for a start. Then sRGB, AWB or Daylight and Natural image style.

It works for me, no doubt if you start there you can hone the details later.

"JonSchick" I can only support what "johnriley" has written.

For "average" well lit and balanced scenes the K-5 does very well in creating a .jpg, (I use the same settings he does).

I found that I could spend a fair bit of time editing a RAW image only to get the same result as the camera did with it's .jpg.

However I like the fact that when lighting or conditions at the scene dictate, I have a one button solution to shoot a RAW + .jpg to give me the option of deeper Post Processing.

Think "Royal Marines Band" in bright, clear morning sunlight....immaculate white helmets and darkest blue black of uniforms, all with polished kit and instruments catching highlights.......

There's a good chance that RAW might be the best bet there! but with the RAW + .jpg option you're sorted.
