Is the doubling of the EV scale or any scale not 3dB, it being logarithmic?
Best regards, John

No 3dB is doubling or halving the power

Thanks for the dB explanation - very interesting indeed.
Do people then generally think that there is any point to single image HDR when the underexposed and overexposed copies of the original are off the histogram scale (after what has been said above by myself and others ??

I guess it depends upon how much dynamic range you want to squuze into the image and how much dynamic range you want to end up with in the image. As long as the subject is stationary I guess there's no limt how much dynamic range you could capture in theory. Everything from straight at the sun to almost complete darkness

Wouldn't that be amazing! But from what I've been saying (and you too Smeggy) there would be no point in trying to achieve this kind of extreme DR from a single shot, even if you pushed it in multiple copies beyond the ends of the histogram and carried out HDR work on these multiple copies.

Sorry I'm with you now

Yes from a single exposure there's no point in making multiple copies and adjusting the exposure of each. You wouldn't gain anything, which is what I said a few posts ago that it would be pointless. The idea of multiple exposures at different EV is to capture more dynamic range that the camera is capable of capturing with a single exposure
