In terms of image quality the K30 probably represents better value for money. However, I would personally choose the K5 as it has a top LCD screen, which I use all the time.

Don't forget the magnesium alloy shell of the K-5, which is a more robust pro-contruction.

And the K-5 has a greater number of physical buttons, which reduces the need to take the camera away from the eye to scroll through menus when changing some of the more frequently used settings. And other niceties, like a rear facing IR sensor.
By all accounts there's very little, if anything, to choose between them in IQ though. Not surprising as they share the same sensor (or so I understand).

Money dictates that I would go for the K30.
I have handled both and do prefer the feel of the K5. It feels "just right", though that is clearly a personal thing.
The K30 also feels great as it has, in my hands, a great grip.
Your choice will fall down to cost, and if cost is no object, feel. Go try them out if you can!

Thanks everyone for that input. I'm really primarily concerned about IQ and wanted to understand if the K30, being newer, had made some improvement. I'll head down to a local store and have a look at both of them in terms of handling and operation, before I buy.

I own both and whilst the k-30 is a pocket rocket, put a big lens on it and it doesn't feel right. The grip is slightly to small for me and stick a flash on and the whole thing just doesn't balance.
If however you are shooting shirt primes then k-30 all the way.
K-30 seems more responsive than the k-5

If you bought a K30, you'd have lots of money left over to buy or at least put towards,a really nice lens which would make a significant difference to your photography.
But I've always wanted a K5 so...

Well, I had the same dilema and have just taken delivery of a K5.
The reason I went for the K5 over the K30 was the twin dials and top screen as I have used my sons KR and prefer not having to go through menus on the back screen but I guess if that doesn't bother you then the K30 is probably a good choice.
Also, the thing that I REALLY like about the K5 over the K20 is that it locks the mode button - the number of times I changed the mode with cold hands and didn't realise!

I keep reading the k-30 does not have two dials, I can confirm it does, the k-30 also has lens focus adjustment like the k-5 has.

I'm getting back into photography as my main hobby after an absence of 10 years. I used to be very active in the film era and have owned many different cameras from Minoltas to Olympus OMs and all the way to mhy first, A Spotmatic. I briefly played with Nikons and Canons in the early digital days, but having looked at the current offerings I've narrowed it down to the Pentax K5 or K30. Has anybody got any views on the difference in image quality produced by these 2 cameras ? I'm looking at both RAW & jpegs at normal ISOs (100 - 800) ?
