K20d without the Pentax software?

I was told the price rise would take place after they had exhausted their present stock - although the lenses will almost double in price is what the Pentax rep told me! So an £800 lens will go to £1600 - ouch!

Maybe now it the time to buy up their stock and sell it off on eBay in a few months and double your money.

Truth is, I am not 100%. I am genuinely torn between the K20D and the K7 as the K7 really is everything I want in a digital SLR from what I have seen and to me, who is new to DSLR as opposed to SLR, there was a significant improvement over the K20D I could discern just from playing with both yesterday in the shop.

And yes, I am an unashamed aesthete and love it for its beauty and ergonomics, just like my LX

Well I would just go back to buying from the USA, it was half the price before the exchange rates going through the floor and after the rises will be again.

The Pentax rawconverter software is nice to have as it's based on Silfypix, but unneccessary as you can download RawShooterEssentials for free legally. PSE7 is another story.

Whether you use Pentax's raw converter or a free program like RawShooterEssentials, you will still need PSE7 to make the most of your photos.

You love that K-7 don't you? So do I; it's not really the improved features of the camera so much as the gorgeous design. I'm setting up savings account specifically so I can afford it in a year or two's time lol.

Won't comment on the price of the camera, but can tell you that I never used the software that came with my K20D (nor that which came with other cameras). I use Photoshop Elements which does most things well and intuitively. It's well worth the c£60. For more money, people swear by packages such as Lightroom, which I suspect would make batch processing of RAW files much easier than either Elements or the bundled Pentax software. But it's not cheap.

Conclusion - I wouldn't let lack of CDs stop me from buying a camera - other than the fact that it perhaps says something about the owner that they haven't kept them all safe and sound in the kind of compulsive way that I do?!

Then maybe £399 is ok for this body? And it is good to know that using and enjoying the camera doesn't depend on the software that comes with it

I've never used the software that comes with any camera, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Best regards, John

As I dont know how integral the Pentax digital software is to using the camera should I avoid this camera without the software, or do you realistically not need it?
You don't need it, but you could always obtain a copy if wanted from a fellow Pentaxian, e.g. me!

I wouldn't let the lack of software put you off.
However... you're right that the k7 is a significant step up from the K20 ( and most other DSLR's for that matter) The K20 is great but you just may kick yourself if you don't hold out for the K7. It is however, around twice the price.
I suspect there will be quite a few K20's around then too as people upgrade to the K7.

You are not really missing much by not having the software. I don't think that there are many here that use the Pentax supplied software.

Hi,

I've just downloaded RawShooterEssentials but it does not appear to support the K10D. Is that correct?

OK, so am I the only person who uses Paint Shop Pro? Mainly because PSE doesn't work on 64bit Vista.
