Found the thread I was thinking of here.

The OP's images have gone but there is close up of the 'bright spot' part way down the thread.
Im impressed .. that was nearly 3 years ago.

I have a hard job remembering last week these days.
Most of the time for me too Mike. I was sure I'd seen something similar and just searched the forum for 'bright spot'. It didn't take too long.

Now . . . what was I doing . . .

Have it repaired. It'll be cheaper than a new camera, and guaranteed for a further 6 months too.

Might be a silly question, but have you tried cleaning it?

Since the defect is always in the same place you may be able to set up a batch routine to do it, certainly for the blob and maybe for the line as well.

With the image at 100% use the rectangular marquee tool to surround the blob, and then select 'Filter','Noise','Dust and scratches'. That should fill in that area from the surrounding pixels. You might need to adjust the options a bit.

Similarly you can probably create a rectangular marquee that covers the whole line from end to end, just one or two pixels wide, and apply the same filter.

If that works then you can automate it by recording it as a script, then you may be able to do the donkey-work of retouching automatically by running the script. This should work for a whole load of images at once.

If you want you could make a full-sized image available on here and people could try different techniques for repairing it - you might end up with a 'fix my blob' script that makes it almost unnoticeable.

I just tried it on your 800-pixel version. Making a marquee from top to bottom to cover both the line and the blob, then using a 3 pixel radius in the options made it all go away completely with no noticeable effect on the roof near the foot of the picture. It will be slightly different on the full-resolution version but the same principles should apply.
Doing the line and blob separately will give a finer degree of control.

Full version for anyone willing to try
It is under exposed version where the line is visible better.

I've produced an action that gets rid of the blob and the line, at least with the line vertical on the right like your example. Just puzzling out how to save the action so you can try it.

Still large: link

One way to do this would be to always rotate the image to the same orientation, run the action via 'File','Automation', then rotate it back. otherwise it will need four separate versions.

ok, for an image the same way round as the example then this action should work, copy this file to your PC first:
http://www.infrared.webspace.virginmedia.com/Other%20Pictures/slides/BlemishRemoval.atn

Then you'll need to load it into Photoshop using the instructions on this page:

http://www.imphotography.com/downloads/installactions.htm

It may be the case that your browser knows it is an action file and offers to open it in Photoshop, in which case it should be added anyway as PS opens.

Then you should get an action set called BlemishRemoval in the 'actions' list, inside which is an action called 'RemoveSoftLine'. If you have one of the offending images open and run RemoveSoftLine it should clear up that line and blob, but only if the line is vertically on the right like the example.

You can also run it from the 'File','Automation' dialog.

This is an experiment, and may not give good results on images with other backgrounds, but certainly worth a try. It can probably be refined a bit, I don't have an example of the blob on a detailed background.
See how you get on.
