K20D RAW Button bug?

Hi folks

I've just discovered what might be a bug in the K20D ( I'm using latest firmware ).

I have [Cancel each time] disabled in the settings and indeed the RAW button fie format remains until I press the RAW Button again. This is as expected.

However under this mode I've noticed that as soon as I use the preview button this cancels teh RAW button setting. I've had a look at page 159 of the PDF manual but nothing about it there.

I'm sorry but I cant follow what your point is, particularly the second sentence. Could you explain a little more?

I suspect it's a (worse than useless) feature rather than a bug because it's still the case with the K-7, and it's even mentioned in the K-7 manual.

There's nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.

Ken, Smeggy means that the Playback button cancels the RAW button setting.

For example, if the RAW button switched to RAW mode, the camera goes back to JPEG (or RAW+) after you press the Playback button.

I understand and have had the same frustration. It makes the RAW button almost useless in practice for more than a one-off shot.

Assuming your aware of how the RAW button works and What [cancel each time] does ....

Pressing the 'preview' button in order to, erm, preview images cancels the file format invoked by the RAW button.

i.e I'll press the RAW button to change from RAW to RAW+ and until I press the raw button again the file format will continue to be RAW+, or until I hit the preview button.

I just wish the RAW button could be programmed to do the opposite. As I use RAW all the time I'd rather be able to push the button for a one-off jpg but sadly that isn't one of the options on the K10/K20.

Crazy isn't it! - I'm an experienced software beta tester and I've had numerous arguments with developers over whether something is bad design or a bug. I consider a bug to be a behaviour that most users don't expect or desire rather than what the developer regards as expected behaviour.

Sigh - At least I know about it now, and I can try and remember to hit the RAW button again following a playback.

or just get a bigger bigger SD card and go with RAW+ for every shot!!

It is an option on the K-7. However, it, or any other option, is not much use for the reason mentioned above.

Purists shoot in RAW only anyway

I take shots of signs at sites or in museums as it is quicker than writing notes and loosing the piece of paper later. It seems a waste of memory to use RAW for that hence my request.

You can on the K20D - just go into MenuRec ModeRAW Button and set the RAW and RAW+ formats to change to JPG only when the RAW button is pressed.

eta: why won't this forum show backslashes? There should be backslashes between Menu, Rec Mode and RAW Button above.

Kris its definitely programmable on the K20D (but I agree not on K10), just got my K20D out and double checked.

I quite agree that changing to JPG for a one off of a museum sign is a good use of the feature, especialy if you select the return to previous mode after one shot.

On my K20D and K7 I shoot RAW+ and the RAW button is programmed to change to JPG just in case I want to do some continuous shooting when the speed of RAW storage would slow done the frame rate too much.

Just played with my K20D...

# take picture
# pressed the RAW button to change from RAW+ to JPG saw the icon on top display change from RAW+ to clear (ie JPG)
# Select PREVIEW see live image on the screen
# take picture RAW, icon stays clear
# take another picture, RAW icon stays clear
# cancel PREVIEW mode
# take a picture RAW, icon stays clear
# pressed RAW button RAW+ icon returns
# take picture

The first and last pictures have a RAW and JPG saved the second, third and forth are JPG only

Did same with K7 same results

Conclusion the PREVIEW button does not effect the action selected by the RAW button.

How ever when I came to REVIEW (i.e. POSTVIEW) the pictures this does deselect any special action selected by the RAW button. Is the action of the REVIEW button you object to?

As I use the 5 seconds 'instant review' option which does not effect RAW/JPG settings I don't find it the action of the REVIEW button inconvenient in my normal usage.

I suspect Smegup means Review (aka Playback) rather than Preview.

Womble, very good use of JPEGs: museum signs etc: I was only joking about shooting RAW only. Shame Pentax didn't do a better implentation of the RAW button.

I was just about to post an answer to this along the lines that my firmware didn't give that option when there was the loud 'clang' of an old penny hitting the bottom of a large empty barrel. I had misunderstood the way the menu worked on that screen and now I have cracked it: jpeg goes to RAW+, and RAW/RAW+ goes to jpeg only. I wondered why there was an option for RAW+ -> RAW+. Many thanks!

BTW, when one uses "quote this post" the backslashes reappear in the edit box...
