That doesn't include the K20! The earlier one does!
Huh??!
Surely 2.4 includes all the cameras that 2.3, 2.2, 2.1, etc included... the list for 2.4 includes the newly added cameras in that version!

Thanks all for your help.

As it turns out it is a software issue with my mac and new software is the answer.

I have contacted Pentax who say the K10 and K20 do have the same processing for the RAW files and as such the software that works with the K10 should work with the K20.
That's a curious (read inaccurate) answer from Pentax and the inclusion of "should work" probably means that the person who replied to you, actually doesn't know.

The K10D has a 10+Mp CCD sensor, the K20D has a 14+Mp CMOS Sensor.

The DNG/PEF RAW files are almost certainly different.

The K20D was not supported on it's release by Picasa or Lightroom, an update was needed for both.

It may well be true that the Pentax supplied software for the K10D will read K20D files (although I doubt it to be honest), but I know of very few people who actually use the Pentax supplied software.

I have just upgraded from a K10D to the K20D, but my mac is unable to open the PEF or DNG raw files produced by the K20D. The Jpegs work fine.

On clicking on a raw file the following message is displayed "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." I have also tried to open them with live quartz and iPhoto but they cannot read the files either.

Even the pentax software cannot open the PEF files, I just get a grey screen!

I have also used the remote assistance capture software and still no joy.

Does anybody know why this might be?

The RAW files from my K10D still work.
The images taken on the K20D can be viewed on the cameras LCD.

Thank you
Hello John,

I could not open any files using Lightroom 1.4, I fixed the problem by changing the camera's settings.Change from PEF to DNG in rec Mode, and then set colour space to AdobeRGB.
A lot of software does not recognise PEF, and DNG, was devised by Adobe, systems so having gained that info from the "Magic Lantern Guide", I changed camera settings
It worked for me try it

Be aware that DNG files are significantly larger than PEF files
(You get more PEF files to a card! PEF performs lossless compression of the RAW data, while DNG does no compression.)

Also note that Adobe's stand alone RAW converter (available free from their website) will convert ANY RAW file into DNG, and can apply lossless compression of the DNG file at that point (saving disk space).

Is DNG better than PEF or is there no difference?

they record the same information so far as I know but PEF is better compressed then DNG by the body. You can shoot in PEF and use the DNG converter from Adobe to convert them to DNG by the computer, they're much better compressed then by the camera.

Just for completeness:

It's the "DNG Converter" you need. It is a standalone application that can convert a batch of RAW files into DNG. You have the option of:
1) Compressing the resulting DNG file.
2) Attaching the original RAW image inside the DNG file for archival purposes (so the application can use the DNG but the original PEF can be available should you ever need it)

I myself like the bigger files so I always shoot DNG.
