K20D help required

I have just upgraded from a K10D to the K20D, but my mac is unable to open the PEF or DNG raw files produced by the K20D. The Jpegs work fine.

On clicking on a raw file the following message is displayed "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." I have also tried to open them with live quartz and iPhoto but they cannot read the files either.

Even the pentax software cannot open the PEF files, I just get a grey screen!

I have also used the remote assistance capture software and still no joy.

Does anybody know why this might be?

The RAW files from my K10D still work.
The images taken on the K20D can be viewed on the cameras LCD.

Thank you

I believe you need to download an updated file from the supplier of the editing software.

Had a similar problem when I went from K100D to K200D. A free download from Adobe (Photoshop plugin) solved the problem.
Best regards

Have you loaded the Pentax software which came with the K20D or are you relying on that which came with the K10D?
Every camera has it's own version of RAW even within a manufacturers range, so the PEF files from the K20D are not the same as those from the K10D and you will need to update the software, or use the Pentax software you got with the K20D. As Terry says you will need to update editing software you use to read the PEFs from the K20D. No doubt there is a similar update available for the basic Apple viewing software, though I am not familiar with this - my Vista machine manages just fine with it.
Try downloading Irfanview if all else fails - that can read K20D PEFs.

Thanks for the replies.

I have contacted Pentax who say the K10 and K20 do have the same processing for the RAW files and as such the software that works with the K10 should work with the K20.

Does anyone have a K20 DNG file I can download to try on my system, or can I upload a DNG for someone who has a K20 working correctly to try mine?

I have called SRS microsystems but it is constantly engaged, I have also sent them emails asking for them to contact me, but to no avail! Which is disappointing.

Thanks
Jon

I know that the Adobe products didn't support the K20D and the K200D and other new cameras because they didn't recognize it when just released but an update solved the problem.

If an update doesn't help can it not be that you deleted the codecs needed to open the files?
I've no idea how MAC works so just sugesting now

It looks like it is a mac file issue

Gwyn has been a star and opened a DNG file produced by my camera with out any issues.

Thanks

Jon try this Adobe Lightroom 2 Trial
If Adobe can't open there own file (DNG) there really is something wrong

Mac does support the raw files natively, but you may need an update. Just go to software update and download all the available RAW codecs, then the OS, Aperture, iPhoto can all handle them with ease.

Direct download link if needed, but does need to be latest OS to work!

Thanks guys,

The camera raw update provides support for Aperture 2 and iPhoto version 7.1.2 or newer only, my iphoto is version 6 and I do not use aperature. So it looks like I will have to get my software updated.

Treated myself to a new camera and now more expense

"DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter, with the "Convert to Linear Image" option turned off, and created from RAW formats that are otherwise already supported by Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later."

That doesn't include the K20! The earlier one does!

Would still download all available updates from Software update anyway, always good to stay up to date, and as an idea iLife 09 was announced yesterday with some cracking updates to iPhoto, well worth a look!
