K20D EDR feature

I've just been looking at the review of the K20D at trustedreviews.com, and was interested to see the comparison pictures with and without Expanded Dynamic Range. See:

The two pictures seem to have been taken from the same file, leading me to think that the EDR feature is something that can be activated post-capture - does anyone know if this is correct? That's not the way I thought it worked, but if this isn't the case then the reviewer is perhaps being a bit misleading?

As I understand it EDR is applied to JPGs only, if this immage was shot in RAW and then processed in camera, one of the RAW processing options might be EDR. This would explain the same picture factor.

When I look through the K20D user manual I do not see any reference of the EDR function being a JPEG only setting.

There is however a HDR "filter" which expands the dynamic range of an image allready taken.

So there are two options in the K20D which will give you an image with a higher dynamic range, one which is in effect when you take the image and there is a filter which can be applied when you develop in camera.

The EDR function has a drawback and that is that sharpness is reduced and you loose ISO settings below 200.

I downloaded the manual from the Pentax US site.

It works in raw too - I've used it a few times. It definitely seems to help with saving blown highlights, but adds a bit too much noise in dark areas for me. It cannot be applied in post-processing as it manipulates the way the image is processed at the sensor - apparently.

I can't explain why those pictures seem identically composed unless they've mistaken the HDR filter for EDR as golfdiesel mentioned.

Thanks for the replies - yes, it does look as if they may have mistaken the HDR filter for EDR. I know there are a couple of other minor errors in that review, but the 100% image of Sidmouth is very impressive in the amount of detail captured (as has been mentioned previously).

you dont need hdr you need a k10 and some hdr software check this out!!!!

Even the K10 is not needed. ANY camera which allows some control over the exposure will do.

The K20 has the nice feature of a expanded dynamic range AT the sensor.

A lot easier with a camera that auto brackets as it reduces the chance of camera shake

Yes it is, but that is possible with all Pentax DSLR's, but even with auto bracketing you need a tripod, handheld bracketing is allmost impossible to keep it exactly at the same position.
