It may be the lens and not the camera, have you tried different lenses? If the same happens you may need to send the camera for a checkup and repair...

Thanks for your suggestion - I only have one lens unfortunately.
I might go to local camera shop and ask to try another lens with it, but not sure how helpful they would be.

Depends on the shop, privately owned places will have staff who are generally more helpful and friendly in my experience.
I assume you have the 18-55mm kit lens, so go try out the one they have on display and the 50-200 as well.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a simple fix, or if not someone could give me an idea of how much these things cost to repair.
Symptoms:
- In AF mode lens focuses back and forth a few times and then fails to find focus lock (green hexagon flashes in viewfinder)
- In manual mode the camera works perfectly, INCLUDING the focus indicators! (so the camera knows when it is in focus)
PS using the kit lens and have tried cleaning the lens & camera contacts
Many thanks
