See the note on page 200 of the manual.
Record Mode menu>Memory Screen>File number should be ticked.

Is it possible to retain image file no,s on the 10D. When I format my card I find that the image count reverts to zero unlike my ds which retains the total no. of images taken. Have I missed something in the manual ?.
