K10D vs K20D

I'm tempted to offer you a quick fifty quid for it, but I'm going to be honest by telling you the real value:

A used DS body recently sold on eBay for £185, and they can go for over £200 with the kit lens included. So you are mistaken to think there is no longer a market for it.

Used K10D kits are currently selling for £330 to £360+. Of course the value will fall, but I conservatively predict the prices will still be over £150 in two years time. They might still be over £250.

I appreciate that you are in Belgium, but there is nothing to stop you selling to the UK and the rest of the world.

The *istDS is still a superb camera and perfectly adequate for all uses apart from the largest print sizes.

That's why I'm still using it John. I love my Ds and I am still in two minds about switching cameras, but if I do it will be the K20D I've decided. I shan't get rid of the Ds, either my husband will use it instead of his increasingly decrepit Canon P&S or I'll just keep it as a lightweight carry about.

I've been thinking about getting the k10D for a while now (will be my first DSLR camera) but have found a deal in my wifes GUS catalogue that if it includes the lens, will probably persuade me to go for the Samsung GX20.

Part or me thinks that as it's my first SLR it might be over kill but another part of me wants something that's going to last me a good few years feature wise. To be honest as low as 6MP would do me 99% of the time but I like the high ISO (and have seen some good pics at 1600) as a lot of my photography seems to take place in low light situations.

Which is only around £150 - £200 more than I can get the K10D for (from the likes of warehouse express etc).

I've just got to convince myself it's worth the extra money.

K10D + 18-55 from SRSmicrosystems is £399, so it's an extra £250.

they'll do you a K10D, 2 lenses, memory card and case for £499.

At that price, it's almost rude not to.

I know it's discontinued, I just meant it would seem daft to develop and introduce a camera between the K20D and K200D, when the K10D is just such a camera. If they want a camera in this range, just keep making the K10D!

The danger in introducing a new model between them in the future, is that it will probably surpass the K20D in features, and undercut it in price (much like the various Olympus models brought out over a year or so - the cheaper ones had higher pixel counts and better features than the 'top of the range' model), rendering it obsolete sooner than is reasonable.

The K10D has a lot of life left in it yet. If anything is introduced, I reckon it will be a K10D Super, with updated image processing and perhaps the interval timer and another couple of features from the 20.

Perhaps a new sensor, around the 12Mp size, but it hardly seems worth it.

While we're (roughly) on this subject...

Would anyone be so kind as to email me a PEF or two from the K20D? Particularly landscape stuff at low ISO and a high ISO image. I won't do anything with the image, of course, and if you want I'll have a go at post-production with your shot as a "thank you"

I feel I am missing something with the K10D... somehow the *ist-D results I could tame, but the images I've produced with the K10D have often left me a bit disappointed. (Though with portraiture and controlled lighting it's been fab.) Mostly my landscapes have something missing.

Anyhoo, I'd like to know if the K20D is going to be worth the upgrade for the kind of images I'm aiming for.

I agree with you, and I don't understand what Pentax are up to - unless they are going to make some genuine improvements to a K10D-like camera.

Things I'm not happy with on the K10D include the LCD screen contrast (not high enough for bright sunlight) and the metering reliability with manual-exposure lenses.

Matt - I'll be really interested to know how you get on with your comparison and see what you think of the K20D files... Oh how I wish I could find where I could borow/rent a body for the weekend in my real life shooting.

Hmm... Good points. However, for the moment my brother is happy with the DS. And it's still a much better IR camera than the K10D or K20D, so I can see it get a new life as such... I'll be keeping it I think...

No PEF yet But looking at that link I provided where someone compared the K20D to the K10D was very interesting indeed. In fact, I tried push-processing the other day - ISO800 with -2Ev. The results were really very good, especially when converted to B&W.

Still can't decide whether it's worth the jump from K10D to K20D... but then I don't have the funds yet anyway (Anyone want a near mint 1.7xAF converter or Metz 50MZ5 kit???? )

Cheers Matt - I am very much in the same boat which tells me something, if I was desperate to upgrade I'd know about it!!! The thing is if I could have a decent play then maybe it might make my mind up for me...

On the T/C - sell it now if you don't use it... I have a sneaky feeling that prices might start to drop soon. A question that I asked Pentax a while ago was "are they planning to produce a T/C to match the new DA* tele lenses" - the answer was YES and an SDM one at that...

Do you mean that it will use SDM to focus a manual-focus lens, or pass power through to an SDM lens to enable it to focus as normal?

I don't really see the former happening.
