Is it really the ISO warning?
Since firmware 1.1 you can put ISO in the view finder in Av et al.

Right, the iso warning went off when I reset the custom menu to factory settings. But after a few shots using green and P, I used TAv, the iso warning came on again. Also the Autoexposure symbol came on, when hadn't touched the button.
I'm beginning to think the camera is a tad broken!
I've put a photo up here:
http://www.ba-joseph.co.uk/test1.JPG
The sky is burnt out and I'm having problems with getting good images with good exposure, either too dark or too light, but that may just be me and a new camera.
camara data:
TAv mode
centre weighted,
autofocus mode: spot
sensitivity 320
shutter 1/4
ap F9
WB: Auto,
SR: on

I don't use TAv myself, but the manual states that if there is not enough light to ensure proper exposure, there will be a warning.
The picture you posted was taken at 320 ISO. If you had limited your ISO range to 320 at the top end, and if the camera thought it needed, say, 360, then the warning lights would flash.

OK, but I had iso set to Auto, full range 100-1600. I have only manual set to 100.I don't use TAv myself, but the manual states that if there is not enough light to ensure proper exposure, there will be a warning.

When you say the iso warning lights flash, you mean the word ISO is seen on the screens and blinks? Only the word ISO is not flashing/blinking, and there are no other lights flashing, just the word ISO steady in the screens. As I've said, this is not seen on M, P or Green, but is on all the others, and according to the book this is only seen on iso warning.
I've sorted out the AE-L 'problem', I had it linked to the focus lock. Silly me.

Since firmware 1.1 you can put ISO in the view finder in Av et al.
Getting somewhere now, just looked through the menu..... again, and indeed ISO was set to front or rear adjuster wheel for some modes so was showing the word ISO. After going through and changing settings it is now only showing in Sv and TAv. These modes are directly related to ISO setting so are showing changes to the ISO.Is it really the ISO warning?

Other settings only show ISO if I attribute a wheel to the ISO value.
I think I was misled by the manual stating that is you see the word ISO on the screens then that is the ISO warning.
So, I think problems solved, the camera is not broke, I just didn't understand what was happening.
thanks for your efforts, I appreciate your time.

Is this because of a discrepancy between the manual (relating to firmware v1.00) and the installed firmware v1.10? If so, perhaps it would be a good idea for Pentax to release 'supplimentary pages' for the manual as pdfs, which you could then print off and pop in the back of the manual.

Possibly, but the manual states (p26) "14. ISO Warning" (shows 'ISO' in diagram)Is this because of a discrepancy between the manual (relating to firmware v1.00) and the installed firmware v1.10?
(p 141) "ISO (ISO warning) appears in viewfinder when set sensitivity is set or exceeded."
This made me believe that if I saw 'ISO' then that was a warning.
As it is, when you see ISO on the screens, it means you can adjust the sensitivity using the control wheels.

I'd be happy with that.

All other modes have the iso warning come up despite setting the range from 100-1600.
I know I can set the iso warning to off but this doesnt seem right.
