K10D Back focusing Issue

I use two lenses with my K10, the Pentax 50-200mm kit lens and the Sigma 17-70 EX 2.8. I seem to be having BF problems with both lenses. I use the 17-70 a lot more than the 50-200. I am thinking about switching to Nikon, but I want to give the K-7 a test drive. Can I fix the BF problem I am having with the K10?

But if I were you I would give serious thought to K7 if your problem is just what you mention. Its an absolutely fantastic camera and you will be amazed with it by everything it has to offer, from the way the body itself is designed to the feature packed aspects of it.

As for the focus problem you can get that with any camera so changing brands isn't the answer. If you can afford it then the K7 would be the obvious choice to go for as you already have two lenses that will fit, if funds are tight then look for a K20D and you wont even have to read the manual(:wink but you will be able to adjust focus on up to 20 lenses.

Precisely why I have decided to stay on the sidelines lately and enjoy just reading rather than butt in as frequently as I used to before .

Brad, I would certainly advise you to not just jump the board based on an issue such as BF. Doesn't make sense at all, and you have read what Mike-P and Alan (fatspider) have just written, those problems can occur with any brand camera. And remember there are compromises and trade offs whatever brand you jump to, be it Nikon or Canon or any other one. Trust me I have been there. You just have to make sure you know exactly what you want and then make a wise decision.

You haven't explained anything more other than just the problem with BF as the reason why you are considering other options, your type of photography, what your other problems are if any with the present setup or why you think you want to consider Nikon, but looking at your present setup and the brief comment you put up it just seems to me that the K7 should be high on your priority list at the moment

I echo that - my K10D back focusses (or front whichever way it is!) Have had no such issues with the K7 - haven't even had to use the focus adjust that is available

I can't actually see a question about Nikon .. just a post about backfocus on a K10D and someone who is considering a move to Nikon wanting to try a K-7 first.

My advice is try the K-7 and if you aren't happy then look at another brand.

For me its a cracking little camera in most respects but the autofocus speed/consistancy is still lacking and if what you shoot requires that speed then look elsewhere (although there is a strong rumour September will see a couple of cameras that will hopefully sort this out once and for all).

I have seen and read about the K-7 and would prefer it over any Nikon. The problem with Pentax, is that most camera shops don't carry Pentax anymore. I know a place where I can hire Pentax Cameras and Lenses. The K-7 goes for about 50 quid for four days. Pentax and rain go togwther, try that with any other camera and you end up with a paper-weight.

Find the debug mode on the web, download and then set to work with a focus chart. It`s a global adjustment but you believe you have a problem with both lenses then you ought to find it a help. I set my K10 t0 +200 and it`s fine for me. The K20 by the way has input for making alterations for up to 20 lenses.

The original Russian software doesn't work properly in Windows 7, and the MODSET.TXT doesn't seem to work in firmware 1.31.

my problem was that i didn't left the SD card door open and remember that after the text you must press enter since there must be a new rule to finish the sentence.

In the meantime, I got the old GX10 software working in Win 7 by running in XP SP2 compatability mode.

My K10D had drifted a little - I had to add +6 to get it correct. The GX10 hadn't shifted at all, but then this camera gets far less used/bounced around/etc.

That technique is (IMHO) far, far easier than using the Russian software.

What's back focusing?

When the AF confirmation says it's focused on the subject, but in reality it's focused some distance behind the subject.
