K1/1 playing up

If I leave the K1 overnight (like you do!) the next day after I have turned it on the first shutter release just makes a soft 'snick!' sound and nothing else will work. I have to remove the battery. When I put it back in the mirror makes its usual sharp noises as it returns to where it should be. The camera will happily work all day now. Next day, it's the same performance. The card shows a blank, black frame that can be deleted (so something certainly happened with the initial click). The lens is irrelevant. I've tried vintage manual focus and auto focus as well as modern versions, just in case, but there is no difference. It just doesn't like that initial shutter release.

Your thoughts?

I noticed this when I left mine for a while, longer than one night.

No idea what it is but the camera hasn't done it in ages.

Never heard of this behaviour before. Is the firmware is up to date ?

Try leaving the camera overnight with no battery, or do a factory re-set.

Not had this before either and my K1's a fairly early one, to add to Peter's suggestions :-

How old is the battery, is it a non OEM one, could it not be holding its charge as well ?

I've recently scrapped a few of my batteries that were not holding their charge as well, these were non OEM versions and I'd had them for a long time.

I've just dug my K1 out after a 6 weeks of not being used and no issues, fired off a couple of random shots in the house, so hopefully as a few posts above indicated, its a one-off.

I have similar problems with mine but it seems to be worse.

The first few shots when using the K1ii are blank images if the camera has not been used earlier that day. Doesn’t matter which lens is attached. The shutter sound is not normal when this happens (seems a shorter noise as if mirror not lifting properly or staying up for the shot if that makes sense). On the verge of sending it in for repair but procrastination has got the better of me !

Tried cleaning contacts, batteries out etc but doesn’t make much difference. All of a sudden it starts working ok and is ok for the rest of the day it’s being used. Did wonder if it’s a similar issue to the k70 problems.

I've just checked the US site and there was someone...user Cdd29 from July this year who started a thread entitled...'K-1 (original) acting weird'.

Was advised to ensure latest update, change battery, clean contacts etc but also apparently someone recommended a RESET to the camera.

Might be worth taking a look there.

Various things to try there then, thank you all. I just picked it up, put a DA 18-55 on it (nearest to hand) and tried to photograph the computer screen. "snn - ick!" and mirror apparently locked up (I shall have to take the lens off and have a look at that). Pressed >playback and the mirror returned with its usual clacking noises. Turned it off while I wrote this and back on again. No problem now at all ! It will likely fail again tomorrow.

This is what happened to mine, on a pre-dawn shot on our first day in Cuba in 2017. It has not happened since.

The mirror mechanism of my Mamiya 645 Pro collapsed while in Bruges a few years ago, two fingers poking around the mirror box 'fixed' it and it's been fine since....

I have the exact same issue with one of my K-1's!!!!

This is a camera that I recently bought on ebay, it had a cracked rear screen which I've since successfully repaired with windscreen resin. When first picked up and used, the first frame is often blank, but the camera then works perfectly on all subsequent shots, there are no issues with the exposure of any images, the problem appears to be the shutter is not opening on the first image. It seems to me that there are too many of us reporting the exact same issue for it to be a coincidence. My camera has only just over 4,000 shutter clicks, so is not worn out!

My other K-1, also on 4,000 clicks, does not show this issue (this is an earlier serial number than the one which has the problem).

Firmware is up to date on both cameras.

I wonder if Pentax are aware of this?

Mine is an early version with probably close to 10k shots. The issue was first spotted after the camera had been sitting unused for a few months during the first part of the pandemic, battery inserted. It happened a couple of times I think, again when sat unused.

I've not seen it more recently, even when leaving the camera for a few weeks to a month.

@David, could you share images of the repair? I'd be interested in seeing what the end product looks like.

Hi HarisF1, do you mean the repair on the rear screen?

Cheers, David
