k-x discontinued?

I have noticed that quite a few suppliers seem to be very low on k-x stock. SRS only seem to have red ones & Limited Stock of those.

Is it so popular that xmas buyers run stocks low before they are replenished in the New Year or is it being dicontinued now?

I recall when the k-r was launched there seemed to be confusion as to whether it would replace the k-x.

Anyone know?

My guess is that it has been replaced by the k-r. If the k-7 goes, will we be left with a 2 camera range?

The K-7 is already gone. It's replaced by the K-5.

Is this actually true? Lots of Pentax literature still talks about the K7 and Kx alongside the K5 and Kr. e.g. http://www.pentax.co.uk/en/Photo_Cameras.html

Although Pentax Japan seems a bit confused http://www.pentax.jp/english/products/, there is no K7 on the main page (but there is a Kx), but then on the homepage there is a banner advertising the K7 mini-site.

The K7 is being maintained in some areas of the world but dropped in others. Which areas get to keep it is anybody's guess.

I suspect Pentax have realised that having 4 models gives them a lot more presence so they're probably delaying announcing the old ones as discontinued for as long as possible. Stock may be starting to run out in some places now though.

My own feeling would be to dump the K7, it's high ISO performance means it's the black sheep anyway.

But I would keep the Kx, with all the Japanese colours, as the entry level dslr. Kr with 3 colours for mid range, and K5 for the folk who take themselves too seriously

I can't see them dropping the K-x that quickly - it's only been out for a year or two and it's still very respectable in the "top trumps" arena (plenty of megapixels, video, good high ISO performance). I would wonder if they've simply sold out of the most popular colours in the run-up to Xmas and are now awaiting fresh containerloads of them?

The K7 on the other hand I can see being phased out - it's their oldest design now and the K5 has replaced it as the top spec DSLR.

Well the srs website no longer has the k-x in the menu for Digital SLR's so that seems to answer my question - I'd say it's discontinued.

That is really tempting as a second body, but it's just too small for my paws.

In all honesty, I would be surprised if they have. Even now 14 months after it's announcement, it is still the entry-level camera to go for, (it is still the best bangs for bucks DSLR out there). However, even though the K-r is a K-x and then some, and a great mid range DSLR, maybe Pentax thinks it is too close for comfort to the K-x, so drop the older model.

Maybe one day we will see a consistant 3-4 model DSLR range from Pentax, where you can have a great camera for your budget. A bit like the others really. Having a 2 model range can only have a negative effect on the buying public.
On other hand, maybe Pentax have something up their sleeve and a new entry level camera will be announced in March at Focus?

hey at least the price crash means that I'll still have my Kx (probably with the A 50/1.7) as a backup camera, as it will be near-worthless to sell (unlike the collection of lenses I bought for it, which will have to go to pay for its replacement.)

I would'nt say it would be worthless, especially if LCE are selling an *istDS with kit lens for 199.
It will probably hold its value quite well.

Gutted.....But guess it was always on the cards.. Why would a company have a product win awards in 2010 and discontinue in Jan 2011 ? Beats me...
